ABOUT THE JOB:


The Street School program is a partnership program between School District #73, the Ministry of Education, and Interior Community Services.

The program provides the opportunity for completing high school education to adult learners who have faced barriers in accessing appropriate and sufficient education resources (ages 19 and over), including those facing addictions and incarceration.


The Literacy Outreach Coordinator's main responsibilities are:

  • Promotes the Street School program in the community.
  • Conducts intake and orients new students.
  • Establishes therapeutic rapport with learners.
  • Identifies learner's strengths and needs. Cocreates realistic goals, intervention strategies and plans with the individual and relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitors and evaluates client's progress towards meeting desired goals.
  • Acts as the liaison between learners, their teachers, and other community professionals and resources.
  • Provides support, guidance and problemsolving resources to clients to reduce their barriers in accessing and successfully completing their education.
  • Provides support and works with other SD #73 Continued Education Outreach Programs as needed including Corrections BC and Recovery Programs.
  • Other relevant duties as needed.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, and ABILITIES:

Strong knowledge and understanding of and demonstrated abilities in:

  • Navigating the corrections system and working with incarcerated adults
  • Working within the School District #73 and the Ministry of Education guidelines and policies concerning adult continuing education
  • Working within the corrections system and supporting adults with navigating the educational programs available
  • Utmost care for the confidentiality of all agency, staff, and client information.
  • Learning new technological tools and programs as necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Sensitivity and inclusion towards a variety of cultural, religious, economic & social beliefs, values & opinions.
  • Working as a team member, while maintaining a high degree of selfreliance and independence.
  • Establishing trusting working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Conducting research and reporting
  • Organization and time management
  • Interpersonal communication including verbal, written

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree in Social Work, or related field and
  • Two years of recent experience supporting individuals who face illiteracy, poverty, incarceration, substance use disorders, mental health struggles, etc. in increasing literacy, education or gaining employment.
  • Or a combination of education, training and experience.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License or equivalent
  • A safe driving record
  • Own vehicle with $5M Business Use and thirdparty liability insurance (reimbursement is provided).
  • This job requires union membership.
  • Background checks through the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and RCMP are required.
