Position: Labor Counsel


First Student is the leading school transportation provider in North America, boasting over a century of experience in ensuring safe and dependable transportation for students. Collaborating with 1,250 school districts across 39 states and 8 Canadian provinces, we transport approximately five million students to 21,000 schools on a daily basis.

As a vital member of the Labor Relations/HR team, the Labor Counsel plays a crucial role within our organization. Working closely with the Labor Relations/HR leadership team, you will also engage with key stakeholders from Operations, Finance, and other support functions. You will offer expert guidance on Labor Relations and related legal matters, leading preparations for union contract negotiations and representing the company in various labor-related forums.


Major Responsibilities:
- Lead collective bargaining negotiations with unions across different operational locations.
- Act as the primary spokesperson and negotiator in labor discussions.
- Provide day-to-day advice on Labor Relations matters to Operations and HR leaders.
- Drive compliance with labor laws and implement necessary changes in collaboration with key stakeholders.
- Spearhead preparations for collective bargaining, ensuring proactive planning and risk management.
- Offer guidance on addressing potential work stoppages and crisis situations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on collective bargaining strategies and execution.
Minimum Experience & Skills Required:
- 2-4 years of experience in labor and employment law.
- Law degree.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in computers and the ability to work autonomously.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to lead strategic initiatives.
- Effective multitasking, prioritization, and deadline management.
- Team player with strong collaborative and influencing skills.
- Outstanding administrative, interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to think strategically and set goals in alignment with organizational objectives.

Travel: 50% - 75%.
