Overview
The City seeks an accomplished leader to serve as the Deputy Chief of Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services.

The Deputy Chief will be a champion of organizational change to institute best practices and inspire teams as the City of Cornwall grows and prospers.

The Deputy Chief is responsible to the Chief of Paramedic Services for the provision of all operational needs ensuring efficient utilization of people management, equipment and financial resources, and monitoring service levels with the established guidelines, standards, legislation and regulations.

The Deputy Chief is also responsible for seeking out and establishing new partnerships with support programs and groups to continually adapt to the communities needs.


This position also is the Liaison to the Regional Paramedic program of Eastern Ontario, and ensures compliance with all directives, representing the corporation and responsible for provisions of the public access defibrillator program, allied agency training and equipment.

The Deputy Chief, Paramedic Services is responsible in ensuring the proper execution of the following:

  • Leading by example and working collaboratively with the Deputy Chief and Commanders, external stakeholders, regional agencies and services to identify, develop and promote a continuous improvement culture for the department and organization.
  • Actively developing community engagement, directly connecting with our diverse community to ensure equitable allocation of services and to improve patient experience.
  • Logistics lead, working within the procurement policies to ensure proper supply of equipment including vehicles, communication devices and buildings maintenance.
  • Has the ability to identify the needs and wants of the community and use a collaborate approach with advanced analytical skills to develop and implement solutions, in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Oversee short and long term planning through the development of department budgets, providing ongoing monitoring of expenditures and revenues.
  • Prepare reports, updates, background materials, briefing notes and presentations as required in support of team meetings, leadership meetings and council related reporting.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Five (5) years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Postsecondary education in Paramedicine or equivalent, along with currently holding your AEMCA and being Base Hospital Certified.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership in decisionmaking, issue resolution, budget management, process improvements, along with proven analytical, writing and project management skills.
  • An ability to interpret provincial or other governmental guidelines and directives.
  • Experience in drafting business cases/reports.
  • Experience working in a leadership capacity within a unionized environment.
  • Core competencies for the position include the ability to empathetically support the people you lead, effectively delegate responsibilities. Fairly measure and manage work and has an interest in self development.
  • Project management, LEAN experience and knowledge of information technology will be considered as assets.
  • The ability to work a flexible work schedule and participate in an oncall system. Majority of the work is done on site.
  • Fully bilingual in French and English would be considered an asset.
The City of Cornwall offers a starting annual salary of $140,543 plus a comprehensive benefits package.
