Under the direction of the Administrator, the Director of Care will oversee the provision of nursing care for residents within the Home in keeping with the philosophy and policies of River Glen Haven Nursing Home.

Overseeing an extensive support team, the DOC will provide leadership to his/her ADOCs, Nurse Practitioner, and Leads for all Nursing related disciplines.


The Director of Care is an integral member of the leadership team, supporting endeavors within the Home by collaborating with other teams, external partners, and family council.

In this role you will be focused on, but not limited to:

  • Plans, organizes directs, and monitors the operational activities of the Nursing Department to provide quality resident care.
  • Establishes and implements goals, objectives and policies that follow regulatory requirements that encompass the Resident Bill of Rights.
  • Applies a residentcentered care approach that focuses on relationships and actively engages residents, families, and extended team members in relation to resident care needs and department activities.
  • Promotes a positive and safe work environment for staff and residents
  • Provide leadership, coaching and support to the nursing staff
  • Achieve Resident Satisfaction and Employee Engagement targets
  • Meeting or surpassing all quality indicators for residents in accordance with company and Ministry guidelines
  • Achieving regulatory compliance in relation to health care records and safekeeping of drugs and narcotics
  • Meeting or exceeding department annual budget
  • Provide direction and support to mangers in all program areas (Wounds, Infection Control, Falls Prevention etc.)
  • Hold regular meetings to keep staff informed of ongoing issues/circumstances
  • Interview/hire/review nursing staff, and implement corrective action where necessary
  • Monitor expenses and write monthly spending reports
  • Monitor payroll and provide avenues for resolution when problems arise
  • Analyze ongoing trends, and find areas for cost savings/quality improvements
  • Assist in processing/assessing incoming residents and their care requirements
  • Track and evaluate quality and risk indicators
  • Develop/update policies, programs, and procedures
  • Stay informed on relevant legislative changes
  • Ensure compliance with MOHLTC and MOL

Collaborate - Work with the multidisciplinary team along with residents and families to customize care plans

Manage - Available funding and a team of nursing staff to ensure high quality compassionate care to our residents

Comply - with required company policies, Provincial regulations, and applicable legislation

Lead - Take a hands-on approach to leading, mentoring, and helping the team as required

Cultivate - Hire, train and engage a team of clinical staff to deliver care in a unionized environment

What you will bring:

  • Degree/Diploma in Nursing
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working as a Registered Nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a Registered Nurse in the longterm care sector preferred
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the applicable Provincial licensing body is required
  • Current C.P.R. designation is required

  • Must provide a complete and current Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.
  • Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses within your province
  • Leadership or supervision experience required
  • Mentally and physically able to perform duties and maintain regular attendance
