The Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto Scarborough is a vibrant department organized into five areas of study.

In addition to providing students with deep grounding in one or more disciplinary traditions, the Department also fosters research at all levels.

Its commitment to socially engaged, leading-edge research and direct engagement with its community is reflected not only through its curriculum but also in the creative and innovative projects undertaken by faculty and often providing research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY:


Reporting to the Chair of the Department, the Manager, Operations & Finance will contribute to the overall vision, goals and mission of the Department of Psychology by playing a key role in the department's strategic planning and departmental operations, including human resources management, financial management, and space and facilities management.

In addition, the Manager will provide oversight of student programming and academic experience, academic administration, and lab operations administration.


In collaboration with the Chair, the Manager will develop short-term and long-term business plans and implement well-defined department protocols, leading-edge business processes, and systems to increase efficiency and operational effectiveness.

The Manager will have a high level of autonomy and is responsible for exercising a high degree of judgment, confidentiality and initiative in resolving departmental and operations-related issues.

This role will also be responsible for providing the Chair with functional advice and/or expertise on various complex issues related to the university policies, legislation requirements, collective agreements and employment policies.


The Manager, Operations & Finance will effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the Department of Psychology, ensuring that the goals and priorities are met.

In addition, the Manager will lead a team of administrative staff to support departmental objectives and will have full managerial authority related to human resource management, including organizational design, assignment of work, and the hiring, performance management and professional development of staff.

The Manager will liaise with Human Resources Services on matters related to staff coaching, discipline and performance issues, collective agreements and employment policies and will, in consultation with the Chair, work on long-range planning of staffing needs and potential organizational changes.


The Manager will ensure accountability on all financial activities in the department, in compliance with the University of Toronto Guide to Financial Management.

The Manager will oversee the development and implementation of the annual and forecasted budgets, review projections and financial statements, and advise the Chair on a variety of complex financial matters.

In addition, the Manager will monitor operating budgets regularly and review the reconciliation of month-end reports for all accounts administered through the department.


The Manager will manage the utilization of Psychology departmental space and in consultation with the Chair, they will recommend, plan, organize, and implement necessary renovations or modifications to teaching, laboratory and office spaces.

This role will oversee departmental information technology needs and will also act as a departmental representative for Psychology on various committees to provide input and expertise as required.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION:

  • University degree or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. A graduate degree is considered a strong asset.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years of related and progressive management experience with demonstrated experience in strategic planning, operational and financial management, program development, and administration preferably within a postsecondary environment.
