Attendance Support Worker - Job Description

Overall Scope


The Attendance Support Worker is responsible for leading efforts within schools and the Regional Centre for Education, and in partnership with Schools Plus and outside agencies to improve meaningful and productive student engagement and attendance.

The primary responsibility and objective of the Attendance Support Worker is to work with students & families who are not successfully engaging with school, to identify causal factors and barriers to success and to implement a plan and program to improve learning & engagement.

This will typically include service in the form of regular check-ins, direct teaching, hybrid and/or blended teaching as required.

The Attendance Support Worker will also integrate strategies aimed at promoting equitable access, inclusion, and diversity, offering students multiple ways to demonstrate their knowledge and thereby helping to remove barriers to learning.

The attendance support worker is an itinerant position, working regionally or more typically with a family of schools.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Supervisor of School Support & the School Principal, the Attendance Support Worker will:

  • communicate and meet with students, and families of those students, who are frequently absent, including home visits;
- work to identify the reason or reasons for the absences and disconnection from school through conversations with students, families, teachers, school program planning teams, and other school staff;
- identify and connect the student and family with targeted supports or interventions through the school, the regional centre, or community agencies, directly or through SchoolsPlus;
- allocate the program/project funds dedicated to improving attendance within the school;
- support and participate in school meetings involving interventions for students who are struggling to attend school;
- support families and other school staff in developing and monitoring attendance and connection support plans;
- support targeted interventions when an attendance/connection issue has been identified;
- lead or support school-based prevention strategies that focus on promoting regular attendance of all students, supported by School Board Attendance Committees;
- support or advise other school staff on school-based incentives related to attendance;
- work with School Board Attendance Committees, established to analyze board-wide student attendance rates and take steps to reduce student absenteeism and promote regular attendance;
- participate in ongoing program development and evaluation;
- help students access distributed learning programs (NSVS, NSIOL) and support as needed;

  • Help support Alternate Education Programs Grades 8 through 12, for those who are unable to achieve success in a traditional school environment;
- comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
