General Summary:


Under the general supervision of the Utility Chief Operators or Utility Supervisor, this position assists with the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Wastewater Collection system.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fosters the District of Squamish corporate values in their work: thinking beyond today, working together, acting with courage and enthusiasm, doing the right thing, and striving to do better every day.
  • Follows the District of Squamish's Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service.
  • Operates, maintains, repairs and installs municipal wastewater collection and treatment systems including lift stations, pumps, manholes, services, mains and other sanitary sewer related infrastructure.
  • Performs flagging duties, directs or controls traffic at work sites.
  • Operates municipal equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to legislation and the District of Squamish policies and procedures.
  • Collects data both manually and electronically.
  • Performs other related duties such as labouring tasks or assisting in water supply and distribution operational duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of operation, maintenance, repair and construction of Wastewater Collection systems and/or Wastewater Treatment Plants.
  • Good understanding of the legislation governing Wastewater Collection and Treatment.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Mechanical aptitude for understanding and using tools and equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and ability to deal with people in a professional manner.
  • Ability to operate power hand tools, cut off saws, brush saws, and chainsaws.
  • Ability to complete construction labour type work including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions and procedures; as well as understand relevant bylaws.
  • Comprehensive and current knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations and requirements as they relate to municipal public works.
  • Ability to work safely and in compliance with the District of Squamish Health and Safety Policy, WorkSafe BC Regulations and Guidelines.

Required Training, Education and Experience:

  • Grade 1
  • Possession of at least one, preferably two of the following valid certificates:
  • EOCP Wastewater Collection Level
  • EOCP Wastewater Treatment Level
  • Certified TCP (Traffic Control Person)
  • Training in handling chlorine
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License
  • WHMIS

AND

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience with a sewer utility.
OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
