Under the general supervision of the Utility Supervisor, this position operates and maintains the municipal wastewater

treatment facilities in accordance with provincial and federal regulations and maintains sanitary sewage lift stations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service:

  • Contributes to the success of our team, creation of our thriving community, by fostering the District of Squamish

  • Follows the District of Squamish's Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service.
  • Effectively responds to public and regulatory agency enquiries in a timely manner.

Supervision:

  • Supervises Operators and Labourers by assigning and checking tasks associated with the operations and
maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.

  • Acts in the capacity of Chief Operator when designated
  • Provides support to staff through training, sharing knowledge and helping trouble shoot challenging situations.
  • Enforces established safety policies, safety rules and job procedures as required.

Wastewater Treatment:

  • Operates wastewater treatment facilities by ensuring effluent meets provincial permit criteria.
  • Records data, manually and electronically, associated with laboratory samples, instrumentation, maintenance
and meteorological information for submission to federal and provincial agencies, and for internal records.

  • Performs general housekeeping around treatment facilities and building site maintenance such as painting,
washing floors, cutting grass.

  • Performs maintenance on pumps, valves, sensors and other appurtenances in the WWTP.
  • Performs Wastewater Collection (WWC) routine maintenance and repairs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of wastewater treatment and collection principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of pump principles, maintenance and repair.
  • Current knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations and requirements as they relate to municipal public works.
  • Basic knowledge of electricity and electrical motors.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate computer software including the District's GIS system, Microsoft Office, the
collector app and SCADA from the office or remotely.

  • Familiarity with municipal policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deal with people in a professional manner.
  • Ability to organize work for others and efficiently organize own priorities.
  • Ability to work safely and in compliance with the District of Squamish Health and Safety Policy, WorkSafe BC and
WHMIS Guidelines.

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with deadlines.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret laboratory, meteorological, SCADA data, trending and biological
information.

  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively supervise other staff.

Working Conditions:

  • Able to work outside in all weather conditions, in confined spaces and in or around raw sewage.
  • Occasional heavy lifting is required.
  • May be exposed to distracting and loud sounds and noise levels.
  • May be exposed to noxious odors, raw and/or treated sewage, and dirty conditions.
  • Work can be repetitive and include long hours sitting or standing.
  • Required to work periodically for emergencies, including after hours, standby, weekends, and holidays.

Required Training, Education and Experience:

  • Grade 1
  • EOCP MWWT Level II certification.
  • WHMIS
  • Possession of a valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's License
  • Confined space training or certification, AND
  • 3 years' experience in a Class II Wastewater Treatment facility or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.
