Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) is the premier destination in Toronto for experiencing sustainable horticulture and understanding our shared responsibility as stewards of the ecosystem. Beyond being a breathtaking plant haven, we are a vibrant community center and a stimulating learning environment.

The Garden, located in the City of Toronto's Park System, is currently a 4-acre botanical garden nestled near Edwards Gardens and the Wilket Creek Ravine. As the Garden gears up to expand its management oversight to thirty-five acres in phases, we are ramping up efforts to ensure sustained organizational performance as a relevant and inspiring living museum.

Toronto Botanical Garden fosters connections between people and plants, cultivating sustainable communities and nurturing reciprocal relationships with nature through continuous learning.

The ideal candidate for the Director of Horticulture role will propel Toronto Botanical Garden forward, honoring the legacy of our original 4-acre botanical garden, and playing a crucial role as we embark on the expansion into Edwards Gardens. Collaborating with our horticultural team and volunteers, you will steer the growth of our horticultural operations, building on past achievements while focusing on creating inspiring gardens and innovative collections that resonate with our diverse and evolving audience. You will also be instrumental in nurturing a team with the capability and passion to elevate the Garden's horticultural endeavors.

  • Develop, manage, and evaluate the Garden's living collections, gardens, and landscapes to advance our mission
  • Lead and mentor the horticulture department to achieve excellence in horticultural management and mission engagement
  • Create progressive horticultural displays and collections that engage diverse audiences and enhance guest experience
  • Work on annual horticulture plans and budgets, balancing short-term and long-term strategic goals
  • Collaborate with various teams within the organization to enhance the Garden's focus as an inspiring plant destination, a dynamic community hub, and a stimulating learning environment
  • Contribute to Expansion and Renewal planning, working on future garden improvements with stakeholders
  • Participate in the Senior Leadership Team and represent the Botanical Garden in the public garden community

The successful candidate will be a high-energy individual with a passion for plants, people, and gardens. They will possess a university degree or equivalent in a relevant field and a minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a similar setting.

Excellent communication, management, and decision-making skills are essential, along with a creative mindset and a collaborative approach. The ability to adapt to changing conditions, take initiative, and drive results is crucial. A commitment to building relationships and fostering innovation is key to excelling in this role.
