Toronto, Ontario, Canada Toronto Botanical Garden Full time

Director of Horticulture

Toronto Botanical Garden

The Organization

Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) is a top spot in Toronto to enjoy sustainable horticulture and understand our responsibility as stewards of the ecosystem. With 300,000+ annual visitors, TBG invites everyone to appreciate plants. Besides being a stunning plant oasis, we are a vibrant community center and a stimulating learning environment.

In collaboration with the City of Toronto, TBG is embarking on a thrilling capital expansion project. Currently spanning 4 acres, the Garden is nestled in Toronto's Park System near Edwards Gardens and the Wilket Creek Ravine. As the Garden gears up to oversee thirty-five acres (in phases), the focus is on elevating organizational performance to maintain relevance as an inspiring living museum.

Toronto Botanical Garden nurtures connections between people and plants, fostering sustainable communities and nurturing bonds with nature through lifelong learning.

How you will contribute

The Director of Horticulture will spearhead the evolution of Toronto Botanical Garden, honoring the legacy of our original 4-acre garden while playing a crucial role in the expansion into Edwards Gardens. Working alongside horticultural staff and volunteers, you will lead the growth of our horticultural operations. Emphasizing past achievements, your focus will be on creating captivating gardens and innovative collections that resonate with the Garden's diverse audience. You should be proactive, adept at balancing mission and business objectives, and driven to cultivate and guide a team that has the ability and enthusiasm to enhance the Garden's horticultural offerings.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, oversee, and evaluate the Garden's living collections, gardens, and landscapes to advance our mission.
  • Establish and mentor the TBG's horticulture department for excellence in horticultural management and mission engagement.
  • Lead a team in crafting progressive horticultural displays and collections to captivate diverse audiences and enhance the guest experience.
  • Formulate, evaluate, and monitor annual horticulture plans and budgets.
  • Balance immediate priorities and annual planning with the department's long-term strategic direction.
  • Ensure a safe and respectful workplace for staff, interns, volunteers, and visitors, following Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Collaborate with various teams to amplify TBG's focus on being a plant haven, a dynamic learning space, and a vibrant community hub.
  • Work with teams on horticulture-related interpretive materials, signage, and programs.
  • Partner with the Development team to leverage sponsorships and grants, track deliverables, and ensure timely reporting.
  • Contribute significantly to the Expansion and Renewal plans, working with landscapers and contractors to execute garden improvements.
  • Foster strong partnerships to advance TBG's mission.
  • Participate actively in the Senior Leadership Team and designated committees.
  • Represent the Botanical Garden professionally in the Greater Toronto Area and national public garden sectors.

Experience and Qualifications

This role demands enthusiasm for horticulture, people, and gardens. The ideal candidate is forward-thinking, collaborative, and adept at managing change to realize the Garden's vision over the next decade.

  • University degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, environmental science, ecology, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive horticultural leadership in a botanic garden, arboretum, or public garden.
  • Experience leading a high-performance team across an organization and in a core-mission function.
  • Thorough knowledge of botanical garden collections, science, sustainability practices, and creative design.
  • Strong plant identification skills and understanding of plant taxonomy.
  • Effective communication at all organizational levels, sound judgment, and timely decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Proven track record in budget management, strategic goal setting, plan establishment, and achievement.
  • Experience in managing volunteers in a nonprofit setting.
  • Arboriculture certification is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with collection management software and competence in handling power equipment and hand tools.
  • Capability to lift up to 50lbs, stand for extended periods, and work flexible hours as needed.

Do you have what it takes?

If you are passionate about connecting people with plants and nature, eager to leverage your skills to contribute to our mission, and embody responsibility, teamwork, and trust, this may be the perfect fit. A strategic thinker open to new ideas, you excel in innovation, problem-solving, and maintaining a positive outlook even in challenging situations. You are collaborative, value diverse perspectives, and approach challenges with humor and positivity.

Job Characteristics

  • Sense of purpose: Due to the fast-paced nature of the role, your ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing conditions is crucial.
  • Results-oriented: Your focus is on achieving results that align with the organization's larger goals in a dynamic environment.
  • Problem-solving mindset: Initiative, competitive drive, and the ability to remain focused on results amidst changing conditions are key to success.
  • You are a goal-focused leader who motivates and engages others effectively. Building relationships and rapport is at the core of your management style.
  • You balance risk-taking with confidence, driving towards results while actively engaging others in problem-solving.
  • Your decision-making is practical and focused on timely solutions.
  • Your work environment presents continuous growth opportunities, recognition, and rewards for achieving business objectives.
