Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the examination and identification of conservation needs of objects required for exhibitions or loans, under consideration for acquisition or deaccessioning, or having sustained damage, under the direction of the Conservator.
  • Plans, executes and documents conservation treatments as directed by the Conservator.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to conservation volunteers and interns.
  • Identifies objects requiring conservation and preventive conservation and reports findings to the Conservator.
  • Implements policies and procedures concerning the conservation of collections.
  • Assists the Conservator with advice and training to site staff on the care and conservation of objects belonging to or under the care of Museums and Heritage Services.
  • Maintains conservation data in the collections management database.
  • Assists with training of staff in care and handling and artifact conservation, under the direction of the Conservator.
  • Performs inspections and reports related to the integrated pest management program.
  • Generates and maintains permanent conservation records, including condition reports, treatment reports, photographic images, and technical data on materials used in conservation of the collection.
  • Monitors environmental conditions in designated areas and reports findings to the Conservator.
  • Participates in emergency preparedness and response planning for museum sites under direction of the Conservator.
  • Participates in disaster response, salvage and recovery in collection, and documentation of recovery, as required.

Key Qualifications:

  • Postsecondary education in a relevant area of conservation of cultural property or the relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in Museums with treatments of historic objects made of a variety of materials and advising on preventive care and training nonconservators on collection care.
  • Experience writing reports, conducting research and analyzing artifacts with careful attention to detail and the use of technical laboratory equipment.
  • Experience performing conservation treatments within a strict budget and schedule.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements to operate a city vehicle travel to various work sites on a regular basis.

You must also have:

  • The ability to acquire a valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition License within 3 months of hire date.
  • Knowledge of conservation principles and practices.
  • Understanding of historical techniques of fabrication, chemical and physical properties of materials.
  • Knowledge of the Professional Code of Ethics as set by the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural Property.
  • Ability to communicate and simplify complex information.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, respond to multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Current WHMIS certification is an asset.
