Position Summary


Under the direction of the First Nations Family Advocate, the Rights of Passage Scaabe will work directly with First Nations youth in care, youth who have aged out of care, and youth who are at risk of involvement with the Child and Family Services (CFS) system.

The Rights of Passage Scaabe will assist First Nations female, 2S and LGBTQQIA+ youth by offering individual supports and workshops that aid in the development of skills necessary for youth to transition into independent living and to ensure that youth have opportunities to fulfill and maintain their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.


Key Responsibilities

  • Attend a weekly case conference to receive client files.
  • Assist youth clients with achieving autonomy and provide safe, timely services to those navigating the child welfare system as part of the required case management process.
  • Complete the intake process for all assigned client files and engage clients to develop their Brave Path.
  • Practice and understand the importance of Informed Consent and Confidentiality.
  • Remind new clients of the Terms of Service Agreement.
  • Liaise with First Nation CFS Agencies, organizations and education institutions to promote services available to First Nations children and youth through the FNFAO and Rites of Passage Stream of Service.
  • Establish and maintain existing partnerships with education institutions, particularly those with a high First Nation student enrollment.
  • Establish working relationships with collaterals and parents/caregivers to ensure that needs are met, and that youth have support with short and long term planning.
  • Establish rapport with youth and families through regular contact while maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops that are designed to meet the needs of participants, create opportunities for healing, cultural awareness, life skills, and employment skills.
  • Assist youth in seeking resources in housing, education, employment, training, treatment, etc.
  • Work with the Mino Bimaadiziwin Grandmother and Grandfather to provide culturally appropriate supports and services.
  • Facilitate FNFAO's Circle of Sister's workshop and establish healthy relationships with youth participants and demonstrate positive role modelling.
  • Work closely with the Advocacy Coordinator to address any challenges as it relates to client files.
  • Maintain uptodate records of client files in the FNFAO Database to ensure proper statistical tracking.
  • Provide a voice for children and youth by advocating on common issues and challenges they encounter.
  • Provide added support to youth involved in the Justice System by attending court proceedings, liaising with crown counsel and lawyers, and preparing Gladue Reports as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Arts Diploma. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • At least 2 years of experience in case management, or related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of the Child and Family Services (CFS) system, policies, laws and regulations, standards and recent legal and regulatory developments is desired.
  • Experience working with and in First Nations.
  • Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare, justice, education and healthcare systems.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in both and development and implementation of workshops.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and criticalthinking skills.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office software, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Knowledge of management, organizational and planning principles.
  • Be able to follow office procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of First Nations people and Nations.
  • Able to work flexible hours and travel upon request.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, and Clear Child Abuse Checks.
