Katzie First Nation (KFN) is growing, and our Education Department is expanding with the addition of a Temporary
Katzie Language Planner. This role will facilitate and guide the important work of solidifying the future of the Katzie people through language-led community engagement sessions for members on and off reserve.


hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ is the ancestral language of the original First Nations peoples whose territory extends from the mouth of the Fraser River and upstream as far as the Stave River.

It includes the First Nations communities of sc̓əwaθen (Tsawwassen), xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), kwikwəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), q̓ə́yc̓əy (Katzie) and q'wa:n̓ƛ'ən̓ (Kwantlen).


Reporting to the HSS Manager, this role will become involved in the planning and development of traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language curriculum and resources through need assessments and community consultation that is representative of elders and knowledge keepers that encompass Katzie's traditions, language, perspectives, values/beliefs, and practices, and revitalization of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language.

What you will be responsible for:

Program Delivery:

  • Create a work plan and budget based on First Peoples Language Revitalization submission goals and objectives.
  • Create a new language needs assessment and use survey monkey, and hard copy surveys for input.
  • Host 3 language engagement sessions (IR1, 2, and 3) to gather and develop what language is and how it should be implemented by Katzie and for the Katzie.
  • Work collaboratively with the Elders program and Youth Centre to assist with language knowledge for their programming.
  • Create a language calendar informing Katzie members of upcoming programs and workshops.
  • Ensure reporting deadlines are met, and deliverables are complete.
  • Create partnership opportunities for hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language camps and Pulling Together Canoe Journey.
  • Determine future needs for the language revitalization program by consulting with the KFN staff and departments.
  • Gather participant input and feedback/evaluations to inform program reviews and if goals and objectives were met.
  • Ensure the Katzie Revitalization plan is updated and guide to the work planning.

Administration:

  • Maintain all administrative paperwork and data requirements for programs, workshops, events, and activities, including keeping accurate and uptodate computer records and program information in a timely and professional manner.
  • Attend KFN departments regarding language revitalization meetings.
People & Culture

  • Support a highperforming team through effective leadership and management of people.
  • Fosters a culture of belonging and inclusion.

What you bring to the position:

  • Knowledge of Katzie culture, protocols, and practices.
  • Mentorship and education rooted in landbased teachings, culture, and history for children, youth, elders, and families.
  • Recognition by the Indigenous community and ability to demonstrate learnings from your journey and teachings received.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships and partnerships with individuals, groups, and organizations in and outside the community.
  • A selfstarter with strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • The ability to speak a Katzie/ hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language would be a strong asset.
  • Computer Literate with experience with Microsoft Office tools and software programs such as Zoom, TeamViewer, and Survey Monkey.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver's license, business insurance, personal vehicle, and ability to travel.
  • Ability to work outside standard working hours (8:30 4:30 Mon Fri) when needed.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector)
