Job Description

:
  • Standardized bird migration, breeding bird, sharp-tailed grouse lek, burrowing owl, or other avian use surveys;
  • Raptor nest monitoring;
  • Amphibian, reptile, and mammal surveys;
  • Amphibian salvages;
  • Species-specific surveys for Species of Management Concern (SOMC);
  • Bat acoustic detector and/or thermal camera setup and maintenance;
  • Pre-disturbance nest surveys;
  • Other ecological surveys (e.g., wetland, soil, and vegetation assessments);
  • Field data QAQC, processing, and demobilization;
  • Data entry and management;
  • Weekly timesheet and expense report completion;
  • Bird and bat fatality monitoring at operating renewable energy facilities (post-construction monitoring);
  • Carcass handling and management in support of post-construction monitoring programs;
  • Support reporting as needed: compiling tables and figures, report writing; and
  • Office-based administrative assistance, as needed.

This role involves 95% fieldwork with travel between the field and the Calgary office. Fieldwork includes long days (up to 12 hours) and overnight stays in remote locations.

During fieldwork, candidates will need to:

  • Demonstrate strong bird identification skills in boreal, parkland, and prairie habitats;
  • Commence survey work early in the morning (e.g., 3 AM) or late at night (e.g., 10 PM) when required;
  • Be available to work weekends, holidays, and long shifts of up to 22 consecutive days;
  • Work overtime hours while in the field;
  • Show proficiency working independently or in small teams;
  • Exhibit effective communication, organizational, and time management skills;
  • Travel long distances daily in challenging terrain;
  • Operate a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road;
  • Work in various environmental conditions;
  • Handle rural hazards and wildlife like rattlesnakes, bears, cougars, and wolves;
  • Operate communication devices in areas with limited cellphone reception;
  • Ensure proper care of equipment and vehicles;
  • Accurately collect field data and adhere to safety and administrative procedures;
  • Meet deadlines and work efficiently under time constraints;
  • Follow protocols diligently.

Job Requirements

  • 3-5 years of survey experience in North America;
  • 5+ years of wildlife field work experience;
  • Ability to identify bird species by sound and sight;
  • A relevant degree in ecology, zoology, or environmental science;
  • P.Biol or R.P.Bio designation or eligibility;
  • Valid driver's license with no restrictions;
  • Experience renting vehicles;
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol tests;
  • Strong problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent organizational and writing abilities;
  • Effective communication and time management skills;
  • Adherence to safety requirements;

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with tablet data collection systems;
  • Proficiency in bat acoustic detectors;
  • Leading field crews;
  • Field Coordination or Project Management experience.
