Your Role

The Fifth Estate, one of Canada's most influential investigative documentary programs, is on the lookout for a new proactive Associate Producer to join our team. Our seasoned journalists have been leading the way in setting the news agenda and advocating for accountability for an impressive 50 seasons.

If you excel in uncovering unique story angles, persuading key figures to appear on camera, uncovering crucial evidence from documents, and prioritizing facts and the public interest above all else, then you are a perfect fit for us.

You are adept at filing information requests, analyzing extensive documents, brainstorming visual concepts, and contributing to story development. Your strength lies in identifying compelling stories that merit a full documentary treatment and transforming research into engaging narratives that resonate with audiences.

In a fast-paced environment like ours, your ability to multitask, your dedication, and your knack for problem-solving are invaluable assets. You are known for taking the lead in generating ideas, collaborating effectively with fellow journalists, and delivering top-notch investigative journalism suitable for video, audio, and written formats.

The Fifth Estate operates on varied production timelines, ranging from long-term projects to quick-turnaround stories. Your adaptability and proven track record of managing multiple projects with different requirements and deadlines will shine in this role.

Under the guidance of the Executive Producer, Senior Producer, and episode producer, the ideal candidate will be an accomplished journalist with exceptional critical thinking abilities. You must grasp the essence of investigative television journalism and the mission of our program.

Alongside your editorial prowess, effective communication skills, and creative flair, you are a dedicated team player. Your readiness to improve continuously, accept feedback constructively, and adjust to evolving editorial and legal standards is vital.

In our quest to cover a diverse range of investigative stories and engage with Canadians to enrich democratic discourse, we aim to reflect the diversity of the nation in our workforce and on-air presentations. We are committed to fostering a workplace that embraces equality and inclusivity, where our unique backgrounds are not just acknowledged but celebrated in all facets of our service as Canada's public broadcaster.

You must exhibit a thorough understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices, ensuring that all aspects of your work align with these guidelines. If you feel that your career journey has equipped you to excel in Canada's foremost investigative journalism program, read on:

Key Tasks:

  • Contribute original ideas for program content that align with the program's goals
  • Expertly verify facts and tailor stories for diverse platforms
  • Prepare detailed, factually accurate timelines for story development
  • Assist in crafting program content through writing, research, and editing
  • Extensive experience in producing feature-length stories or working on long-form broadcast projects
  • Participate in review processes, maintaining comprehensive feedback records
  • Conduct thorough fact-checking, line by line, to uphold high standards
  • Identify and engage interviewees, develop background materials for the producer/host
  • Write, edit, and prepare stories for digital and social media platforms as necessary
  • Contribute to evaluating all aspects of production
  • Perform various production tasks as needed, such as field producing, archival research, project coordination, and content editing and packaging

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent, preferably in journalism
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in national or network-level investigative journalism
  • Strong grasp of investigative, documentary, and current affairs distinctions
  • Familiarity with modern investigative tools and techniques, including open-source intelligence and data analysis
  • Sound knowledge of legal considerations in investigative journalism
  • Exceptional research abilities and a proven track record of source cultivation
  • Proficiency in data journalism and experience with short and long-term data projects
  • Demonstrated success in pitching, researching, and delivering investigative content
  • Extensive expertise in all facets of story production, from pre-interviews to fact-checking
  • Cultural sensitivity, community connection, and cross-platform media experience
  • Strong editorial judgment, critical-thinking skills, and a flair for innovative storytelling
  • Capacity to excel under pressure while meeting deadlines without compromising quality
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, think critically, and incorporate feedback effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly
  • Adaptability to evolving work methods and schedules
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented, and dedicated to reflecting diverse perspectives in storytelling
  • Initiative, organization, and productivity in a high-paced environment
  • Availability for flexible work hours
  • This is presently a hybrid role based in Toronto, subject to change.

Candidates may be evaluated through skills and knowledge assessments. We appreciate all applicants' interest, however, only those chosen for an interview will be contacted.
