About who we support:

Our employees are supporting a diverse client group including youth and adults, all genders, from a wide cross section of social, ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds who are representative of our broader community.

We are accountable to the people we serve by providing the highest quality of service with integrity through the delivery of responsive, innovative and evidence-informed approaches.

About the role:

The John Howard Society of Ottawa has opened a brand-new permanent supportive housing program in the heart of Centretown on Lisgar Street.

This program is a 29-unit apartment residence designated for adult women who have exited chronic homelessness.

In partnership with Minwaashin Lodge this program prioritizes 70% of its housing units for Indigenous women and strives to contribute to a reduction in the number of women staying in shelters or living on the street.

The Support Worker position is a foundational role that ensures the daily and weekly routines of the program are maintained by supporting clients in meeting their basic needs and working collaboratively with their colleagues.

By modeling excellent client engagement skills, successful support workers understand the importance of providing a non-judgemental and inclusive standard of care for the community and are willing to take initiative as needed.

Important tasks include the facilitation of various social activities, light meal preparation, following client care plans, supporting residents in their apartments with essential life-skills and responding to client crises and building situations as they arise.

Developing strong, consistent, and engaging rapport with the women is most important. Staff are encouraged to share their ideas and creativity to implement activities of any kind.

This is your opportunity to champion exceptional care and acceptance for women of all backgrounds.

It is an exciting role that requires compassion and understanding for the unique challenges faced by women exiting chronic homelessness, strong critical thinking and boundary setting skills, creativity, and a passion for developing a resilient and safe community for vulnerable women.
