McMaster University's Digital Society Lab is an inter-disciplinary research centre dedicated to building a more resilient democracy and society by studying societal transformations in the digital age, deploying digital technologies for social scientific inquiry, and prototyping new digital tools for social innovation.

We are looking for an outstanding product designer to join our new web development team.


Working in close collaboration with the web development team and product stakeholders, the product designer will be responsible for designing and prototyping engaging and accessible digital tools, including apps and websites, based on best practices.

Job Summary:

Responsible for designing digital media products.

Accountabilities:

  • Design graphic interfaces and interactive media elements.
  • Collect and document user requirements.
  • Analyze project requirements and recommend solutions for various initiatives.
  • Evaluate, implement, and utilize digital media equipment, software, and services.
  • Develop and ensure all media meets accessibility standards for online delivery.
  • Edit and update illustrations and graphics.
  • Photograph and digitally edit photos.
  • Capture, convert and optimize audio and video recordings for use on the web.
  • Develop and post online training and support materials.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend emerging digital media technologies and methodologies.
  • Provide advice and services related to the design, creation, and online delivery of digital media.
  • Compile statistical data, prepare reports and maintain logs and files.
  • Consult with faculty and support staff to develop the use of all types of media.
  • Prioritize projects, and ensure that requests can be completed.

Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Design, Visual Arts, Multimedia, or related field. Applicants without a degree will be also considered.

Experience:
Requires 2 years of relevant experience.
A strong track record of designing and prototyping high-quality, engaging, and accessible digital products, such as apps and websites—as demonstrated through an outstanding portfolio of work

  • Proficiency in the principles of effective design
  • Proficiency in the tools of digital design
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience—including collaborating with product stakeholders to identify product requirements, collaborating with a web development team to implement designs, and evaluating the user experience
  • Strong problemsolving skills
  • Strong communication skills and a readiness to work in a collaborative, teambased environment
