Department summary


The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers students the opportunity to pursue an exceptional, high quality education in Canada's largest mechanical engineering department.

Position summary

Duties

  • Developing algorithms for conformal slicing for surfacing and overlay operations including integration and data creation of 3D non contact metrology systems, marker and associated encoding of non contact optical/laser sensors
  • System integration and hardware/software development for robotic cell and computer numerically control units and algorithms for Robotic and inverse kinematics, Gcode, CNC machines and associated firmware Sensor integration and calibration
  • Carry out 3D additive manufacturing operations and Overlay and cladding of corrosion resistant materials
  • Research new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reports to the principal investigator relative to the feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments.
  • Supervise the safe handling of material; coordinate purchasing requests and writes specifications and justifications for equipment purchases.
  • Assists in supervision of, graduate students, and student workers in the laboratory

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Chemical, or Computer engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Certified programmer and operator for Yaskawa robots and controllers (such as the GP50 robot and YRC1000 controller), completed training course and received certification.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in:
  • Expertise in design, construction, and programming of 3D printers encompassing a range of size, material (PLA, machinable wax, clay), and electrical architecture.
  • Proficient in configuring a variety of CNC and 3D printer firmware including GRBL, RepRap, Mach3, and Marlin.
  • Proficient in ROS (Robotic Operating System) including the ability to:
  • Interface and communicate with in-house developed hardware utilizing microcontrollers such as an Arduino as well as professional controllers such as the Yaskawa YRC1000.
  • Simulate the trajectory, collision detection, and dynamics of custom robot models using MoveIt, Rviz, and Gaze
