The Embryologist provides specialized Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) services to the OFC including: assessing and processing gametes and embryos for therapeutic procedures, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), other micromanipulation procedures, cryopreservation and warming procedures, embryo transfers, and quality control activities on human gametes and embryos.
The Embryologist maintains accurate inventory of cryopreserved gametes and embryos, maintains laboratory instruments and consumables, and contributes to the ongoing improvement of laboratory services, procedures, and standards.
The Embryologist also participates in research activities and collaborations related to human gametes and embryos.The Embryologist performs work in accordance with the laboratory standard operating policies and procedures and coordinates work within the team and with the clinical team on a rotation basis.
The Embryologist adheres to safe and ethical laboratory practices.Key Responsibilities:
- Assesses and prepares gametes for IVF and ICSI and performs IVF and ICSI
- Evaluates fertilization and embryo development, and performs embryo transfer procedures
- Performs micromanipulation procedures on embryos
- Performs cryopreservation and warming/thawing procedures on gametes and embryos
- Maintains accurate inventory of cryopreserved gametes and embryos
- Maintains laboratory instruments and consumables
- Contributes to the ongoing improvement of laboratory services, procedures and standards
- Ensures patient safety
- Reviews and complies with all OFC policies and standard procedures
- Performs other duties including lab liaison role on a rotation basis and andrology work as required
- Performs work in accordance with relevant provincial and federal legislation (Ontario Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA, etc ) and participates in any training when required
- Safeguards all confidential information obtained and/or used during the course of work and takes reasonable precautions to protect the privacy of clients, coworkers, physicians, and management
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the Policies and Procedures at OFC
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor degree in biological sciences from an accredited tertiary educational institution
- A minimum of two (2) years' experience in human ART in a highvolume clinic preferred
- CFAS embryologist certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of gamete and embryo biology, cryopreservation, micromanipulation, tissue culture and microscopy
- Excellent manual dexterity, eyesight, handtoeye coordination, and microscopy skills
- Skills in properly identifying and assessing specimens and selecting adequate processing procedures
- Skills in identifying unusual specimens/situations, which require the attention of the Lab Scientist
- Skills in performing general laboratory techniques, e.g., processing of specimens, operation/trouble shooting of equipment, quality control procedures
- Strong knowledge of quality and risk management, laboratory safety procedures and WHMIS
- Working knowledge of laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to Assisted Human Reproduction
- Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the transport of dangerous goods
- Working knowledge of regulations pertaining to the ethical conduct of research involving humans
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and in written format
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Strong ability to manage conflicting demands, e.g. unexpected procedures time changes, equipment availability, space
- Strong ability to organize, prioritise and work independently
- Strong training skills
