Reporting to the Senior Manager, Advancement Services, this role is responsible for strategy and oversight of donor relations programming, development event planning/management and development communications. The individual in this role will maintain a high level of strategic and creative thinking, accuracy and attention to detail and will cultivate a strong base of knowledge in the areas of fundraising engagement protocols and industry best practices. This role plays a critical function in shaping our donor engagement strategy for both the local supporter community and our growing National supporter audience of the Wilder Institute.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate on development of long-term plans for supporting needs of increased fundraising performance and strategies to engage with a nationally growing audience.
  • Collaborate with internal management peers to develop meaningful, streamlined and effective engagement opportunities for the organization's growing supporter audience locally and nationally.
  • Develop, maintain and streamline processes and procedures for donor relations, development events and communications, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Oversee and provide long-term planning and content strategy to Donor Relations, Development events, and Communications, ensuring the maintenance, growth, and full engagement of our supporter audience.
  • Support preparation of annual revenue and expense budgets for the engagement team.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, training, and support for direct report and ensure an atmosphere that encourages open and respectful communication.
  • Supervise the strategic objectives of the direct report, including annual goal setting and regular performance reviews.
  • Act as a back-up for the direct report ensuring a full understanding of all day-to-day responsibilities and role requirements.
  • Manage current donor engagement subscriptions and identify new sources of technology, resources and practices to assist the development team.
  • Manage projects as assigned, with the support of the Senior Manager, Advancement Services.
  • Embrace continuous education on relevant information which affects this role.

What you will bring:

  • Minimum of 5 years' related experience in various areas of fund development and/or advancement services.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in managing high performance teams.
  • Memberships in AFP, CAGP or other professional fundraising related organizations considered an asset.
  • CFRE accreditation considered an asset.
  • Ability to manage and navigate sensitive/difficult conversations or situations that may arise.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
  • Skilled in developing, interpreting and presenting KPI's to various audiences.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Tessitura (or other fundraising databases).
  • Project Management skills and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated dedication to outstanding customer service.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong listening and interpretive skills.
  • Ability to coach and mentor high performance teams.
  • Ability to manage time effectively between varied responsibilities.
  • Strive to achieve best practices and committed to professional development.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily working at a desk with a computer, some on-grounds mobility is required.
  • Although primarily Monday to Friday, occasional evening and weekend work is required.

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
