Indigenous Special Projects Coordinator


The Climate Change Impact on Food & Water - An Indigenous-Led Response is an initiative that will support the creation of two community-grounded and land-based courses in food security and water sovereignty, consultation and knowledge-sharing around how climate change will impact First Nations communities in the region and how to prepare for food and water security in a changing climate, and awareness activities for the knowledge and initiatives.


This project is anchored in the college's long-standing relationships with learners, Elders and community members with Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the expertise of our colleagues at the Centre for Climate Change Management, and the discoveries that will come from this collaboration.

It will also engage an existing network of Indigenous leaders from across Canada with traditional knowledge on healthy sources of food and water.


Led by the Indigenous Innovations Specialist and the Acting Director of Indigenous Initiatives & Special Advisor at Mohawk College and also includes the college's Centre for Climate Change Management, a regional hub for collaboration on climate action, it also includes academic faculty and support staff on the course curriculum development for courses on food security and water quality management for Indigenous learners.


Responsibilities:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with the Indigenous Innovations Specialist and Acting Director of Indigenous Initiatives & Special Advisor to develop clear objectives, milestones, performance metrics, timeframes, implementation roles and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate discussion and facilitate regular meetings to understand and address climate change impacts on food sovereignty, water management, and sustainability for Indigenous communities, and to discuss Indigenous responses to these.
  • Provide project management and understanding of Indigenous climate change initiatives to access, measure, and evaluate the project to ensure that deliverables have been met including leading a committee of recruited community representatives.
  • Coordinate and implement project deliverables including conference coordination, seedbank creation, and greenhouse development.
  • Coordinate events or workshops as needed related to the project.

Program Administration

  • Work with the Indigenous Innovations Specialist to provide progress reports for key stakeholders and keep the public informed and engaged.
  • Work with the Indigenous Innovations Specialist and the Director of Indigenous Initiatives & Special Advisor to identify necessary funds/resources for implementation of activities.
  • Support engagement and outreach campaigns.
  • Update reports and presentations with relevant content, and oversee maintenance.
  • Record and draft meeting minutes for BACCC and BACCIT meetings.
  • Create any role descriptions for student staff team member supporting the project and collaborate with Acting Director of Indigenous Initiatives & Special Advisor and Indigenous Innovation Specialist on duties.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years of postsecondary education in Project Management, Business or Indigenous Studies or similar field; plus two years of project management and/or sustainability experience in an Indigenous setting experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a postsecondary environment and/or with Indigenous communities or organizations.
  • Experience in project management, community engagement, reporting is required.
  • Experience with, and awareness of, and sensitivity to, the unique cultural differences and needs of Indigenous communities and participants.
  • Understanding of, or demonstrated willingness to learn about protocol related to working with Elders, Indigenous Knowledge and Indigenous Pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
