RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre.

Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University.

The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position summary

Under the direction of the Environmental Health and & Safety Manager, the incumbent supports all health and safety programs associated with activities conducted at the RI-MUHC.

General Duties

  • Assists the RI-MUHC community in identifying, assessing and eliminating workplace hazards,
  • Develops and provides safety trainings to staff and trainees,
  • Conducts risk assessment on new research projects and experimental protocols,
  • Participates in the elaboration and development of policies related to safety, occupational health programs, operational procedures and physical facilities in order to facilitate compliance with regulatory and best practice requirements as per applicable guidelines, standards and regulations,
  • Ensures proper management of hazardous waste (biomedical and chemical) from collection to final disposal,
  • Conducts inspections of laboratories and other workplaces within the RI-MUHC and reports deficiencies to principal investigators, directors and managers,
  • Responds to emergency situations requiring cleanup and decontamination of affected areas,
  • Maintains records and prepares reports as required,
  • Participates in other health and safety activities and special projects, as required.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry or similar scientific discipline and 3 years of related experience,
  • Experience with research laboratory environment and/or EHS programs is highly desirable,
  • Good knowledge of applicable federal, provincial, local regulations and best practices,
  • Ability to work simultaneously on several projects with different deadlines,
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and teaching,
  • Can work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team,
  • Proficiency with standard office software,
  • Excellent French and English, spoken and written,
  • Availability to work flexible hours as required.

Pay Scale:
Commensurate with education and experience

Work Shift: 9 am to 5 pm, Mondays to Fridays

Work Site:
