Violence Against Women Services Elgin County delivers 24-hour Drop-In Counselling; 24 Hour Community Help Line; 24 Hour Emergency Shelter; Community Based Care & Counselling for women who have been abused, women who have been sexually assaulted, and children who have witnessed abuse; and Prevention Through Education programs. Help is immediate, respectful, and compassionate. Each year over 2,000 people find the help they seek.

Work is in person at our 24-Hour Emergency Shelter in St. Thomas which serves women and children from across Elgin County and further afield too.

Responsibilities include dynamic risk assessment and safety planning; holding the space for each person to be heard and believed; facilitating crisis de-escalation, counselling, and care plans; ensuring support occurs in a warm, safe, and welcoming residential setting; and delivering practical support and information to help each woman in their pursuit of safety from harm.


Qualifications needed for this role include a strong commitment to and alignment with the vision, mission, values, and framework of the agency.

A nimble spirit is also necessary to be comfortable with and remain grounded on days when things go differently than planned.


You will also require:

  • Sound analysis of the societal issue of violence against women including its impact on both women and children.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills effective in person, on the phone, and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability in dynamic risk assessment, safety planning, & crisis support.
  • Appropriate combination of experience and postsecondary education.
  • Work experience in a residential setting and/or related social service is preferred.
  • Proficiency in office computer programs (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Ability to lift 30lbs.
Clear Criminal Reference Check, current CPR/First Aid certification, valid driver's license, and access to a reliable vehicle are mandatory. Working a variety of shifts including days, afternoons, nights, and weekends is required to support delivery of 24-hour services.
