Reporting to the Superintendent, Regulatory Operations & Compliance, the Wildlife Coordinator is accountable for supporting in the implementation of the Airport Wildlife Management Plan.

This position is responsible for mitigating risk and hazards associated with the day to day wildlife activities on or near the Edmonton International Airport.

Day in The Life

You might be wondering what you can expect in a typical day at work.

Every day will bring new opportunities, focusing on key responsibilities, including:

  • Actively patrol the airfield and groundside by dispersing birds and animals as required, to ensure wildlife is not a hazard to airport operations.
  • Assist with trapping or raptors (hawks and owls), starlings, crows and magpies, ground squirrels, and coyotes to mitigate the risk of added additional wildlife on site. This may involve handling some animals, some lethal control by cervical dislocation, shooting, and or drowning.
  • Facilitate periodic sampling in the airfield for insects (primarily grasshoppers) during the summer months, which allows for predictive measures to be taken in alignment with the Wildlife Management Program.
  • Coordinate and oversee all activities related to bird strike sample collection, which involves acquiring permission from ground crews to collect an aircraft sample and liaising with flight crews to gather details for the investigation and report.
  • Support the effectiveness and efficiency of the Wildlife Management Program by providing accurate record keeping and data entry for all wildlife interventions in the AIRMAN database. Some paper logs may be required daily.
  • Assist with signage spiking and/or other physical labour such as digging, trenching, etc., to ensure habitat manipulation is kept up to mitigate the risk of added additional wildlife on site.
  • Provide effective wildlife communication, ensuring all stakeholders both internal and external receive timely and appropriate communication on ongoing activities and issues as they arise.

Special Requirements:

You Have:

  • High School Diploma and relevant work experience
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain an AVOP "D" permit
  • Ability to be trained in the required day to day Regulations applicable to wildlife management on airports
  • Basic knowledge of wildlife mitigation strategies at YEG and ZVL.
  • Knowledge of Wildlife Control Procedures Manual (TP13548e)
  • Familiarity of active wildlife control measures and removal techniques
  • Previous Aerodrome "airside" substrate knowledge.
  • Possession of a Firearm Personal Acquisition License
  • Must secure and maintain appropriate airport security clearance and acceptable criminal records check
