Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice-President, Capital, Facilities and Business Development the key function of this role will be to develop, support, coordinate and monitor the implementation and ongoing functioning of an Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Plan.

This will include education, training and associated activities across the organization to ensure optimization that fosters a culture of safety and emergency and disaster preparedness based on best practices and full compliance with Accreditation Canada requirements.


The Manager, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness will play a pivotal role in Risk Management by ensuring effective planning and preparedness for identifying potential risks, high-risk situations, and the coordination of response and recovery to emergencies and the promotion of patient safety across the organization.


The incumbent will be an experienced change agent who will work closely with all levels of management, staff and external stakeholders to identify and mitigate risk.

The Manager, Emergency and Preparedness will lead Emergency Preparedness priority process for Accreditation.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Disaster and Emergency Management and/or directly related field required.
  • Lean Certification preferred.
  • Three to five years emergency preparedness management experience, preferably within a Healthcare setting.
  • Sound knowledge of emergency response codes in a hospital setting.
  • Working knowledge of the Incident Management System (IMS) for emergency preparedness.
  • Excellent planning, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage tasks accordingly.
  • Project management experience is an asset.
  • Evidence of effective organizational, interpersonal, leadership, judgment, critical thinking and decisionmaking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Visio, excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexible, selfdirected and able to work effectively with mínimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability in interpersonal, communication, diplomacy, coaching, facilitation and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and manage change.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develops, supports, coordinates and monitors the implementation and ongoing functioning of an Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Plan, education, training and associated activities across the organization.
  • Leads Emergency Preparedness priority process for Accreditation.
  • Facilitates development and evaluation of corporate wide emergency preparedness education and training using multiple modalities (e.g. Simulations, tabletop exercises, etc.)
  • Plays a pivotal role in Risk Management by ensuring effective planning and preparedness for identifying potential risks, highrisk situations, and the coordination of response and recovery to emergencies and the promotion of safety across the organization.
  • Coordinates and conducts education and training related to Emergency and Disaster Preparedness.
  • Maintains records/database of EP education and training; tracks corporate compliance with mandatory Emergency Preparedness training and provides reports for leaders as required.
  • Supports, coordinates and monitors the implementation and ongoing functioning of the Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (HIRA) for the hospital.
  • Coordinates annual plan for each Emergency Code.
  • Provides guidance and advice to teams on planning and conducting emergency response code. exercises (e.g., tabletop, mock drills) and staff on access to policies.
