At Resonance, the Research Director is responsible for planning, collecting, developing, and evaluating best in class resources that support our clients' goals. The Research Director also plays a strategic and principal role in driving the development of our Best Cities reports and insights to enhance both economic prosperity and quality of life for communities in the places we serve.

As the manager of Resonance's research team, the Research Director is a key resource to plan and develop research materials, conduct analysis and draft / produce reports for a wide variety of projects, from mining user-generated data in online channels such as Tripadvisor, to conducting labour market and cluster analysis for regional economies, to drafting, programming and analyzing surveys of visitor and resident sentiment.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Directs all aspects of the research process, including relationship building, project planning, data entry/analysis, database development and reporting insights and takeaways
  • Define research methodologies, data collection strategies, and analysis frameworks to ensure robust and insightful outcomes to support destination development, economic development and brand strategies
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify key research areas and prioritize projects accordingly
  • Collects and analyzes key third-party statistics and produces infographics, charts, reports and presentations with respect to tourism, economic development, innovation, and livability for communities, cities, regions, states/provinces and countries
  • Direct research projects from initiation to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential roadblocks, and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate risks and maintain project momentum
  • Oversee the production of high-quality research reports, whitepapers, and presentations that effectively communicate findings and insights to internal and external stakeholders
  • Drives data innovation and integration to improve productivity and project efficiencies
  • Designs and leads data projects and develops quantitative models to construct scenarios and assess impacts of various policy/social factors
  • Manages the development, deployment, analysis, and reporting of online surveys and other quantitative research programs for clients
  • Oversees and reviews research-related work produced by Resonance team members for validity and consistency
  • Provide mentorship and management support to research analysts efficiently and effectively, assisting with performance evaluations and other administrative managerial tasks
  • Interact with internal and external stakeholders to inform research design/delivery, and to answer research questions.
  • Continues to train and develop knowledge of new research and data mapping and visualization technologies
  • Contribute to research articles, marketing materials, and reports

Qualifications/Skills

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree with a concentration in economics, public policy, urban planning, data science, geography, or other quantitative social science.
  • Proficiency in research methodologies, statistical analysis, and data visualization tools
  • Understanding of economic development research methods and data sources to lead industry cluster assessments, occupational analysis, benchmarking and shift-share evaluations
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and planning skills, and the ability to synthesize abstract concepts into clear and accessible language
  • Exceptional command and familiarity with public available data sources (e.g. U.S. Census, Statistics Canada and more) and data platforms such as EMSI Lightcast, ESRI, CoStar and others
  • Experience in data storyteling and supporting processes such as data sourcing, cleaning, and ethics
  • Excellent written and presentation communication abilities, with a track record of producing high-quality research outputs such as consulting decks, strategy reports and more
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and maintain disciplined adherence to project goals
  • Capacity for managing and leading people; ability to connect to clients and stakeholders both individually and in large groups
