Job Summary

The primary focus of the Researcher Assistant Technician is to assist in a number of research projects in the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, at BC Children's Hospital. Responsibilities include development and completion of the Case Report Forms (CRF's), electronic data entry and database management, and tracking enrolled subjects for long-term follow-up assessments.

Organizational Status

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions distributed across British Columbia. Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).

The incumbent reports to the Head, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, the other Principal Investigators (PIs), and the Research Director. This position works with pediatric neurosurgeons, the research director, clinic nurses, consultants in statistics, imaging and computing, hospital clerical staff and UBC Department of Surgery faculty and staff.

Work Performed

  • Coordinate prospective studies, enrolls patients, and assists with the studies operations.
  • Develop case report forms specific to the studies in the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
  • Enter collected data into database.
  • Maintain and organize the study patient log, case report forms and other important project related files.
  • Contact families of enrolled patients to arrange follow-up visits.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of study numbers and follow-up exams.
  • Assist PI(s) in transferring imaging data files to other study sites.
  • Perform chart reviews for retrospective studies.
  • Contributes to a respectful, inclusive working environment.
  • Performs other responsibilities, as required.

The Research Assistant Technician will be allocated office work space within the Division of Pediatric Neurology, at BC Children's Hospital, Ambulatory Care Building, K

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant Technician is required to conduct the research activities in an ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality with regards to information, particularly about study participants. Along with other colleagues, the incumbent is accountable for conduct concerning participant-related activities, to the Principal Investigators, the Division Head, Research Director. Study data must be reliably and accurately recorded. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered too. Errors in judgment may result in insufficient progress of research projects, thereby adversely affecting funding for studies. Inappropriate handling of interactions and communications can create embarrassment for the Lab and Division in dealings with faculty, students, University, affiliated hospitals, patients, business affiliates, and the public. The incumbent needs to pay attention to details, be aware of pitfalls and willing to repeat tasks if necessary. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigators, and the Department.

The incumbent reports to the Head, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, the other Principal Investigators (PIs), and the Research Director.

  • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
