Department, Unit or Project Description:


The Latin American Health Science Student Success Initiative (LAHSSSI) is housed within LANMU, and it aims to provide academic and general support to Latin American/Latinx students in the Faculty of Health Sciences or with interests in the Health Sciences/Medicine at McMaster.

LAHSSSI aims to create a community at McMaster to promote essential research and academic skills, strengthen academic English language skills, and to develop research networks and psychosocial support for Latin American/Latinx students in the Health Sciences.

Our aim is to achieve these through multiple sessions over the rest of the academic year and continue this into the next year.

LAHSSSI is led by Dr. Elena Verdú (Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology), Dr. Felipe Fajardo (Pediatric Resident PGY3), Dr. Gastón Rueda (Postdoc, Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute) and Millaray Freire-Archer (Medical Student, Year 2).

Job Summary:


The Project Support Assistant will work under the supervision of the leads to provide administrative support in creating and implementing various sessions for LAHSSSI to support the academic growth of Latin American/Latinx students in the Health Sciences.


Accountabilities:

  • Update records by entering data into spreadsheets or databases.
  • Conduct and write individual reports, databases and create a library corresponding to each conference or event.
  • Collect, maintain and organize hardcopy and/or electronic records/files.
  • Copy, collate and assemble a variety of documents and packages.
  • Conduct web searches to locate documents and articles used for references on the project.
  • Coordinate with leads, community and speakers for specific events.
  • Assist with other related duties to contribute to the overall operation of the conference or event.
  • Answer routine inquiries regarding specific to a project, conference or event.
  • Perform other clerical duties of a similar nature, specific to a project, conference or event.

Education:
Registered in a graduate or undergraduate program at McMaster

Experience:
Not required.

Assets:

  • Strong background/experience in addressing and/or resolving issues related to student mentorship, student success and other challenges that Latin American/Latinx students encounter in their academic experience.
  • Experience with community outreach, mentorship and/or equity activities.
  • Strong written communication skills, research skills, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in team environments.

Additional Information:

  • Provide verbal and written feedback to supervisors.
  • Oversee daytoday operations of LAHSSSI
