POSITION SUMMARY

As part of the Sustainability, DEI & Social Impact team, the Senior Advisor will serve as the Program Lead for Indigenous Engagement & Reconciliation, taking charge of developing and executing the bank's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), a long-term strategy that accelerates our response to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action for the corporate sector. The selected candidate will report to the National Lead for DEI & Social Impact, playing a crucial role in aiding BDC's endeavors to advance reconciliation with key stakeholders and collaborating with internal and external partners.

This role will involve overseeing BDC's initiatives to advance reconciliation, including strategizing and implementing actions related to the RAP to ensure that BDC's policies, programs, and practices align with our commitment to the Calls to Action. Responsibilities will encompass research, strategy development, project management, and engagement with various stakeholders (internal/external).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Offer expert advice on Indigenous Engagement and Reconciliation to enhance BDC's strategies, policies, and programs aligning with the Calls to Action. Lead the development of a comprehensive Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) across the organization in collaboration with internal stakeholders. Propose solutions that support the goals and priorities of the RAP, guiding BDC stakeholders in integrating the RAP into processes, policies, procedures, and strategies by identifying areas for enhancement. Guide and oversee the process for BDC to achieve PAR (Progressive Aboriginal Relations) certification. Advise on best practices related to internal governance and advisory frameworks for Indigenous Engagement & Reconciliation, including the potential establishment of an Elder Council or similar structure. Conduct research and benchmarking to recommend Indigenous engagement and reconciliation best practices, standards, policies, trends, and regulatory obligations (where applicable). Interpret national and provincial laws, such as UNDRIP, and recommend the most suitable approach and adoption strategy for BDC. Identify essential external partners for BDC to collaborate, consult, and form partnerships with as part of our journey towards reconciliation. Provide assistance in crafting a Human Rights Position Statement and Implementation Plan, specifically offering expertise and guidance on the rights of Indigenous peoples in alignment with UNDRIP and/or other relevant provincial or federal laws and regulations (existing or forthcoming). Support the National Lead for DEI & Social Impact in strategic planning, resource allocation, and execution of initiatives to promote and drive human rights and reconciliation at BDC. Provide guidance and support, as required, to internal teams like Partnerships, HR Talent DEIA, and Client Diversity to advance representation, bolster inclusion in the workplace, and broaden market outreach to underserved groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of ten years of relevant experience, encompassing leadership in organizations, strategy and policy formulation, and leading organizational transformations in the DEI and human rights field. Experience in overseeing or advising on human rights, DEI, and/or Indigenous Engagement and Reconciliation initiatives within a corporate environment. Bachelor's degree in law, Human Rights, Indigenous Studies, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Social Science, or a related discipline. A Master's degree or Law degree specialized in Human Rights is a plus.

Knowledge and Expertise

Demonstrated comprehension of human rights principles and regulations Experience with Truth & Reconciliation in a business context, such as familiarity with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the UNDRIP. Awareness of the historical challenges faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada. Understanding of the work carried out by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada, the TRC Final Report, and Calls to Action (including Call to Action #92) Ability to devise, implement, maintain, and assess organizational strategies that contribute to reconciliation within the business community.

Soft Skills

Excellent communication, public speaking, and persuasion skills, with the capability to cultivate robust relationships. Collaboration skills and the ability to be a valuable team member. Meticulous and well-organized with adeptness in data collection and analysis. Strong project management abilities. Driven by results and comfortable in a dynamic setting. Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) Demonstrated knowledge and grasp of the financial industry is advantageous. Effective written and verbal communication skills in both official languages (English and French) are beneficial.
