A Day in the Life

With a focus on prevention, the Safety Manager oversees the formal Occupational Health and Safety program at our locations in Canada. This position ensures compliance with all regulatory and legislative bodies and exercises due diligence measures with regards to safety in the workplace. The People Experience department is a small team with a big reach as the focus is on creating exceptional employee experience. Safety at NRI is a huge part of this employee focus, with the expectation of high levels of proactiveness to ensure employees are safe within our working environment.

What does success look like in this role?

The ideal individual must have the ability to manage the overall environmental health and safety program along with the training and development of all NRI employees. They must have effective communication and interaction across all levels of the organization with a marketing appeal. They must be comfortable to work independently but also embrace collaboration and working within a dynamic, positive team while having a customer service outlook.

  • Strong verbal and written communication required and inter-personal skills a must
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels internally and externally.
  • Very strong communication and writing skills required.
  • Require strong time management and organization skills.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and be willing to visit and work out of other locations.
  • Ability to travel to all Canadian facilities (BC, Ontario and Quebec).
  • Excellent Consulting Abilities
  • Excellent MS Excel, Word, and Outlook skill

The Must Haves:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Health & Safety or related field
  • 5+ years of safety experience in lieu of degree
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred
  • Safety certificate courses preferred
  • Must have physical ability to carry out essential job functions, including but not limited to, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., walking and standing for extended periods, climbing ladders/stairs, ok with heights in elevated areas and tolerating conditions such as dust, dirt, noise, odors, heat, cold, etc.

Things You Will be Doing

Improves and maintains NRI's Safety program.
  • Ability to resource, reference, interpret and understand legislative requirements as it pertains to NRI Operational requirements and communicate these requirements to NRI Management.
  • Maintains computerized and manual records relating to OH&S material.
  • Responsible for ensuring regular and project-based Hazard Assessments are completed.
  • Responsible for creating and developing Safe Work Practices and Health and Safety Policies.
  • Responsible for ensuring that proper legislative training is identified and coordinated for NRI Managers, Supervisors and team members.
  • Represents NRI during safety related inspections in BC, Ontario and Quebec (WorkSafe, CNNEST, WSIB).
  • Maintains Emergency procedures as they pertain to each individual facility.
  • Identifies opportunities in the Safety program and revises or creates policy and procedures to close the gaps.
  • Responsible for ensuring Incident Investigations are conducted as it relates to legislative requirements.
  • Accountability for Motorized Equipment training and record retention (training and equipment checklists)
  • Maintains Dangerous Goods training and records of dangerous goods.
  • Responsible for the ongoing and evolving WHMIS program based on Client mix and product in each Canadian facility.
  • Ensures training effectiveness through quantifiable measures.
  • Takes a lead role in the Incident Investigation and Accident Investigation processes to ensure follow up and compliance of NRI processes.

Schedules and facilitates regular safety meetings.

  • Takes a leadership role in the monthly JOH&S meetings.
  • Chairs the monthly Manager Safety meetings.
  • Ensures annual training is provided to safety committee members.

Conducts internal audits annually to ensure organizational compliance with NRI's safety program.

  • Trained to be the internal safety auditor and executes annual requirements to achieve COR certification in BC.
  • Coordinates externally for COR re-certification audits in conjunction with provincial requirements.

Proactively researches and provides recommendations to Operations for the handling of new products that require WHIMIS or TDG compliance.

Performs other duties as requested.
