Assistant Professor in Industrial Ecology for Energy and Resources, Schulich School of Engineering

The Sustainable Systems Engineering program in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Industrial Ecology for Energy and Resources .

Sustainable Systems Engineering is a technical, life-centered transdisciplinary field focusing on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems over their life cycles with the goal of environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

The program will train engineers that will have the knowledge, awareness and competencies needed to manage and implement engineering solutions that minimize negative impacts, strive to achieve at least net neutral outcomes, and, ideally, are restorative with people and the planet in mind.

The successful applicant will align with the University of Calgary's Ahead of Tomorrow strategic vision and support its strategic academic and research priorities of transdisciplinary scholarship, future-focused program delivery, and deeper community integration.

We are seeking exceptional candidates to pioneer the development of an original, innovative, and sustainable research program in industrial ecology, with a specific emphasis on energy and resource flows.

The successful candidate will specialize in material flow analysis, industrial symbiosis, input-output analysis (i.e., non-process LCA), circular economy, and data analytics within the broader context of industrial ecology.

Candidates with skillsets in energy system modelling will also be considered.

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary individual to contribute to our academic community, advance cutting-edge research, and inspire the next generation of scholars.

They will enrich our academic community, propel pioneering research, and ignite inspiration among the next generation of scholars.

The candidate will actively contribute to teaching, curriculum development, graduate student supervision and mentoring and is expected to provide service supporting SUSE, School, University and Profession.

A strong background in quantitative research methods and modeling as applied to problems in the area of material and energy flows in industrial systems
A track record of excellence in teaching
A degree in an engineering discipline and a doctoral degree with a focus on sustainability-related methods or problems
A track record or demonstrated potential of generating high-quality and impactful scholarly research
The potential to establish an externally funded research program, and to achieve international recognition within five years
Alignment between their research interests and those of the Schulich School of Engineering (

Ability to attract and develop excellent trainees, students, and future researchers

Ability to develop and teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses core to engineering and relating to SUSE specifically material flow analysis, industrial symbiosis, input-output analysis, circular economy, and data analytics within the broader context of industrial ecology.

Have strong oral and written English communication skills
