On-Call Education Assistant
(School & Student Support A, SSA, EA)

Hours: 6.5 hours per day

$29.67 per hour + 20% in lieu of benefits, if not contributing to MPP $29.67 per hour + 14% in lieu of benefits, if contributing to MPP

From September to June each year with some positions available during Summer School.

  • Duties may include, but are not limited to_:_
  • Collecting data and tracking student progress
  • Supporting students when they display unexpected behavior
  • Fostering positive interactions between the student and their peers
  • Implement individualized programs and activities while focusing on building independence
  • Providing personal care: Dressing, toileting (including diaper changes), feeding, lifting, transfers to and from a wheelchair etc
  • Escorting student on community outings and travelling throughout the city. This may include accompanying and supporting students on work experience at various sites.
  • Qualifications: _
  • Completion of Grade 1
  • Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Ability to independently lift and position students up to 35 pounds
  • Ability to run after a student to avert them from danger
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • The following areas are an asset:
  • Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team
  • A clear understanding of the theory and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Completion of POPARD coursework
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (CPI or MANDT)
  • Ability to speak a second language

  • Completion of 2 years Post Secondary in the following areas:
  • Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education._
  • 2 years experience in the following areas:
  • _Directly working with children/youth who demonstrate a higher need for support in the areas of social-emotional learning, behaviour, learning disabilities, mental health, or complex trauma._
- _Assessing and supporting the social, emotional, behavioural, mental health and/or learning needs of students._
- _Implementing various behavior support and/or self-regulation programs and modifying intervention strategies for students with diverse needs._
- _Working with students exhibiting challenging behaviours, FAS, conduct disorders and implementing various learning and behavior management strategies._
- _Planning and effectively carrying out activities to promote student development._

Itinerant Assignment:


A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties.

Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.
