The National Judicial Institute (NJI) is an independent, bilingual, not‐for‐profit organization, based in Ottawa and Montreal, with a mandate to coordinate and deliver educational programming to members of the judiciary across Canada.


Internally, a team of lawyers assists judicial education planning committees on matters of content and pedagogical design, while meeting professionals coordinate all logístical aspects of the programs.

As part of its curriculum, the NJI offers over 70 judicial education programs each year.

In addition, the Institute provides a number of educational resources to members of the judiciary, such as Judicial Education Guides, Electronic Bench Books, hard‐copy publications, educational modules to assist in program design, and an online judicial library.

The NJI is looking to fill the permanent position of Manager, Program Planning and Delivery, based in Ottawa.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Manager, Program Planning and Delivery, along with a Program Officer and a Counsel (or a Judicial Associate) constitute the program team responsible for the design and delivery of most judicial In-Person Education programs.

They work in close cooperation with members of a program's judicial planning committee and other members of the program team, they manage the process for effective planning, development, delivery, and evaluation of each conference assigned to them.


Primary responsibilities include:

Program Planning, Logistics and Administration

  • Work with judicial program planning committees to facilitate planning sessions, calls and decision-making, for overall conference design, dates, location, and hotel venues;
  • Establish the schedule and deadlines for conference planning and implementation;
  • Negotiate contracts and supervise all conference suppliers e.g. hotel management, interpreters, translators, equipment suppliers, transportation to facilities etc.;
  • Supervise the production of final faculty and participant lists and agendas;

5. Manage all phases of on-site delivery: shipping of materials, set-up (registration desks, workshops, plenary sessions, catering, AV set-up, etc.), dismantling, and debriefing sessions;

  • Plan, order, organize, and supervise all conference meals and hospitality;
  • Act as an information resource for conference content, history, evaluations and materials;
  • Respond to the needs of education/planning committees on-site;
  • Ensure final wrap-up of conference activities per NJI procedures and requirements; and
  • Ensure that hotel staff and others contracted for the conference fulfill contract obligations.
Additionally, the Manager, Program Planning and Delivery will manage a team of 3-4 direct reports.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential

  • University degree in a relevant field, OR an equivalent combination of experience, training and education;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a managerial role, directly supervising employees;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience including, but not limited to, event planning, project management, financial management, editorial and proofreading skills;
  • Proficiency with Office 365; and
  • Willing and able to travel nationally for work.
Desirable

  • Certification in Meeting Professional (CMP) designation;
  • Fluently bilingual in French and English (R/W/O);
  • Experience in working in a non profit organization;
  • Knowledge of court jurisdictions and structure;
  • Proficiency in SharePoint; and
  • Proficiency in Project Management Software, such as Asana.

  • Protect information and adhere to the ethical principles of the Institute.
