About the Clinical Nurse Leader/Patient Educator Position:
Reporting to the Operations Leader and working in collaboration with the Chief of Nursing for Professional Practice Issues, the

Clinical Nurse Leader/Patient Educator coordinates the day to day operations of a designated service and supervises staff. Acts as a clinical resource to nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members in the provision of direct care to patients. Assists in the promotion of research and quality improvement initiatives within the service. Teaches patients and families self-care, promoting their own abilities to develop and maintain healthy behaviours within the context of an illness or disease. Develops, implements and evaluates approved patient education programs.

The John Ruedy Clinic at St. Paul's Hospital is a comprehensive primary care clinic for people living with HIV/AIDS in British Columbia. The JRC is a collaboration between the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and Providence Health Care.

With a focus on addressing the needs of the whole person and reducing the impact of poverty, addictions, mental health, food insecurity and episodic homelessness, the clinic offers integrated and comprehensive services to patients.

The JRC is named in honour of John Ruedy, MD, who helped transform St. Paul's Hospital into a comprehensive clinical-care centre for patients with HIV/AIDS.

Qualifications / Skills and Education:

Education

  • Registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant plus three years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to supervise.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service.

  • Ability to teach and lead group sessions.
  • Ability to identify learning needs and develop educational programs.
  • Ability to provide and/or develop resource materials including educational materials.
  • Ability to coach and counsel individuals and families.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work independently.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Ability to operate related equipment, including computers.
  • Duties and Responsibilities:Coordinates the day to day patient care activities of the designated service by performing duties such as:
  • Monitoring patient acuity and flow of patients in the service to ensure staffing levels match patient and service needs; making or adjusting patient assignments as acuity of patient changes.
  • Supervising staff, actively monitoring and following up on the work of staff, coordinating work assignments, providing critical input on employee performance, orienting new employees, calling in relief staff as necessary, and authorizing overtime shifts; problemsolving and troubleshooting staffing issues.
  • Scheduling and coordinating the use of staff, equipment, and other resources; assigning the responsibility of care of patients to others; coordinating the care given by others in the designated service.
  • Assessing patients/families' physical, emotional, and mental readiness and ability to learn through methods such as physical assessments, discussions, completion of questionnaires, chart review, and through collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Organizing resources, supplies, and equipment for patient/family home; developing educational materials for patient/family, such as pamphlets, brochures, instruction sheets, and manuals.
