Must be available to work Saturday or Sunday 9:00-5:00pm; Tuesday and Friday evenings 5:00-8:00pm, and as needed.

The Durham Supervised Access program provides a safe, neutral and child focused environment for children to visit with their non-residential parent following separation or divorce.

This position works effectively within a team of volunteers and staff to deliver service to involuntary clients who are experiencing difficulties with child access, post separation or divorce.

The DSAP Assistant supports the DSAP Specialist or Facilitator in ensuring that all programs provide quality, service and support to the participants and their families.


In this role, you will:

  • Support the program coordinator to facilitate and deliver supervised visits and exchanges in a safe setting
  • Observe the interactions between the children and their visiting parent or relatives and supports the participants in following the Agreement for Service
  • Provide redirection if necessary
  • Utilize strategies to support children in making a smooth transition from one parent to the other
  • Complete written factual observation notes for each visit or exchange assigned
  • Identify issues of concern to the staff in charge to ensure a safe setting for all families in attendance
  • Model appropriate child focused behaviour at all times
  • Facilitate virtual visits via Microsoft Teams when the centre is not available (example Covid closure)
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; take a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represent the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner
  • Understand the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Children Protection Services
  • Understand the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff
  • Other duties as assigned

You bring:

  • Minimum 1 year related work experience
  • Relevant knowledge about the effects of separation and divorce on children and families
  • Strong written communication skills to provide reports that are accurate in summary details
  • Able to manage conflict and dissatisfaction with intent to find resolution
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members/clients, staff and volunteers
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and nonvisible dimensions of diversity
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Current first aid and CPR required
  • May require access to transportation in order to travel to other locations in the Durham region (Ajax, Oshawa)
