Who are we looking for?

We have an opportunity for a Senior Project Manager/Engineer/Scientist – Emergency Response to join our Calgary, Alberta office. Reporting to the GHD FIRST Western Canada Leadership Team, the Senior Project Manager will be a link between the leadership team, project managers, staff members, and clients, to ensure excellent project execution and support continuous improvement of the GHD FIRST program.

The Senior Project Manager is an experienced and driven professional with a combination of strong project management skills, leadership skills, excellent business acumen, and exceptional people and influencing skills. This professional will enhance the GHD FIRST business and develop a strong supporting team regionally. Furthermore, this professional will support the GHD FIRST business throughout North America by coordinating with project managers across Canada and the US.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Planning, management, and coordination of small- to large-scale projects including maintenance of project scope, schedule, and budget, and coordination of project staff.
  • Providing mentorship and guidance to junior project managers to ensure projects are executed effectively and client expectations are met.
  • Act as the first point of contact for clients for new emergency projects in Alberta, with ability to delegate tasks and request support as required from GHD FIRST team.
  • Develop working relationships with project managers in other regions to effectively share knowledges and lessons learned.
  • Preparation of technical correspondence, project proposals, technical reports, work plans, and project specifications including cost estimates and budgets.
  • Interpretation and implementation of provincial and federal spill and environmental regulations.
  • Communicate with GHD subject matter experts to ensure technical accuracy on project deliverables (i.e. risk assessors, industrial hygienists, remediation specialists, etc.).
  • Work with the GHD FIRST Western Canada Leadership Team to lead and expand environmental emergency response services in Western Canada.
  • Enhance relationships with current clients in the region and identify potential new clientele.
  • Support and actively participate in implementing the regional business plan, with support from the Western Canada Leadership Team.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement within the GHD FIRST program and work with peers and senior support to develop solutions.
  • With support from administrative staff and by delegating tasks as required, ensure that GHD FIRST staff in the region are maintaining required training.
  • Work with equipment managers in regional offices to ensure required equipment is available and cooperating effectively.
  • Responsible for developing partnerships with local/regional emergency response contractors to provide support services.=

What you'll bring to this team:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, Emergency Management/Spill Response, Chemistry, and/or related field
  • Keen interest for long term career growth and development within the GHD FIRST program.
  • 8+ years of experience in one or more of the following:
    • Environmental emergency response and preparedness
    • Environmental site assessments and remediation
    • Planning and managing large-scale construction projects
  • Proficient in project management/environmental remediation
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other technical professionals, clients, and regulatory officials
  • Positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, team player and leader
  • Strong mentorship skills to assist with development of junior and intermediate staff – successful candidate will be a direct supervisor for staff.
  • Strong delegation skills to ensure that emergency projects are staffed and managed appropriately
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time (mostly local, some regional)
  • Willingness to travel to US to support, if required.
  • Willingness to respond to call outs during non-routine working hours
  • Self-starter, flexible team player, willing/able to work on a wide variety of tasks
  • Strong organizational skills to assist with day-to-day operations of the business and organize logistically complex responses/projects
