This position involves leading a small team to achieve the strategic objectives of the OSM Program and Branch direction.

Additionally, the position entails overseeing the development, modernization, and long-term monitoring programs, as well as the implementation of research studies in lotic systems and watershed sciences.

This position guarantees that the Oil Sands Monitoring Program and its partners and stakeholders, including the Government of Alberta, receive scientifically credible and applicable information to responsibly manage Alberta's watersheds, particularly lotic systems, against growing pressures from industrial development, population growth, climate change, and other influences.

Key outcomes of this position include:

generating innovative scientific ideas and approaches for pursuit by scientists within OSM, the Government of Alberta, and nationally; offering expert guidance on scientific program and project design; spearheading large-scale, multi-year scientific initiatives that span scientific fields; and publishing scientific discoveries regarding the state of the environment through various channels.

The Watershed Science Team Lead is expected to regularly present at scientific gatherings and conferences, publish peer-reviewed papers, and provide expert advice to OSM leadership on the cumulative impacts of human activities on water quality and quantity.

This position seeks a distinguished scientific expert in watershed science and research at national and international levels.

Leading the review, development, and ongoing enhancement of long-term lotic water quality and quantity monitoring programs, along with lotic research addressing significant concerns of the OSM Program and the Government of Alberta.

Developing multi-year research and monitoring plans driven by scientific inquiries to evaluate the state of Alberta's lotic systems.

Plans also encompass scientific assessments of the impacts of human activities and environmental drivers like climate change.
Ensuring the safe and effective delivery of long-term lotic monitoring and research programs.

Conducting, leading, and actively engaging in the analysis and completion of scientifically sound environmental data evaluation and reporting that meet project goals and reporting obligations as required by law.

The outcomes include technical reports for OSM, synthesis reports, contributions to environmental reports, and peer-reviewed papers in global journals.

Guaranteeing integration between lotic system monitoring and research programs and other environmental monitoring and research initiatives in OSM.

Creative Problem Solving:

Collaborating with leadership, scientists, and staff in OSM to ensure innovative, scientifically sound research and monitoring procedures are conceived and implemented in OSM's lotic system monitoring and science programs.

Leading the primary and collaborative writing of standard and specialized reports to articulate key observations and conclusions of long-term monitoring and focused research endeavors on the state, status, and trends of Alberta's lotic systems, including peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Build Collaborative Environments:

Collaborate with OSM scientists, field monitoring technologists, and other partners at all stages of monitoring and research endeavors, from inception to delivery and reporting.

Develop Self and Others:
Oversee a team of junior watershed scientists, supervise their scientific outputs. Cultivate a culture of research excellence in scientific design and monitoring within the team.
Holding a Ph.D. in a scientific discipline with expertise in one or more of these fields:
