Introduction:

  • Miyoskamin, _an empowerment centre for Indigenous women and children, is a new building recently acquired by the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal.

Located at 757 Rue Des Seigneurs, Miyoskamin is the site of two new innovative projects: a 2nd stage housing program for Indigenous women and the Saralikitaaq Centre for Indigenous children and families.

Saralikitaaq uses a holistic approach, based on the Dr.
Julien Foundation model of community social pediatrics.

(CSP) This method incorporates medicine, law, social work, education, and culture to provide children with the integrated care and support they need to grow up healthy and reach their full potential.

We are currently seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to fulfill the role of Family Lawyer &
Mediator.

About the Position:


The Family Lawyer & Mediator acts as a resource for Indigenous women and children accessing services through both the second stage housing program and Saralikitaaq Centre.

The Family Lawyer & Mediator recognizes when clients' human rights and Indigenous rights are being violated, is able to develop solutions, and facilitate access to justice.

This role is focused both on direct legal advice as well as prevention through education, advocacy, and mediation. The Family Lawyer & Mediator is part of an Interdisciplinary team of professionals at the new Saralikitaaq Centre.

Role and Responsibilities:

Facilitation and Delivery of Community Social Pediatrics Services:
Under the supervision of the Director of Miyoskamin, in collaboration with the
Interdisciplinary team, and with guidance from the Saralikitaaq Steering
Committee, the Family Lawyer & Mediator is responsible for the following activities:

  • Becoming familiarized with the community social pediatrics(CSP) model and principles developed by the Dr.
Julien Foundation

  • Participating in CSP trainings and integrating CSP tools, techniques, and approaches into Saralikitaaq services
  • Participating in exchanges with with each child, their family and those around them and allowing emotions, facts or ideas to be expressed without prejudice or judgment
  • Analyzing each child's individual needs and strengths by understanding each family member's experience
  • Creating and implementing an intervention plan with the child, their family, and their community
  • Conducting followups with each child and their family on the progress of the intervention plan
  • As needed, participating in Steering Committee meetings to relay information and to seek guidance on matters requiring additional advice and expertise

Legal Advice & mediation:
Under the supervision of the Director of Miyoskamin, the Family Lawyer &
Mediator is responsible for the following activities as it pertains to the delivery of legal services:

  • Assisting NWSM clients with legal advice and informations involving families, family relationships, child custody, divorce, alimony, paternity, child emancipation, domestic violence, and adoption
  • Helping NWSM clients to understand and navigate legal processes and working with the clients to develop a legal strategy that incorporates their goals, priorities, and interests
  • Helping NWSM clients understand their legal options
  • Participating in family mediation sessions alongside other specialized staff and providing legal advice to support positive child and family outcomes
  • Building relationships with lawyers and/or legal advisors who are equipped to provide legal counsel and advice for NWSM clients in a variety of different legal situations (criminal law, civil law, human rights, etc.)

Education, Advocacy, and Mediation:
Under the supervision of the Director of Miyoskamin, the Family Lawyer &
Mediator is responsible for the following activities as it pertains to education, advocacy, and mediation:

  • Developing opportunities to boost client education and awareness on rights pertaining to human rights, Indigenous rights, and rights of children & families, etc.
  • Developing opportunities to boost public awareness on rights pertaining to human rights, Indigenous rights, and rights of children & families, etc.
  • Providing legal knowledge and information to NWSM staff regarding the rights of children, parents, and families

Peer Support and Participation:
As part of a collaborative working environment, the Family Lawyer & Mediator is responsible for the following activities:

  • Attending and participating in staff meetings
  • Embracing a collaborative and respectful environment amongst peers
  • Embodying the mission and values of the NWSM and Miyoskamin
