The Ministry of Transportation is seeking dynamic individuals to undertake policy analysis and research related to the development and implementation of policies, and delivery of programs to support high-profile transportation initiatives, including oversight of transportation agencies such as Metrolinx and the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission.

The Branch

The Metrolinx and Agencies Oversight Branch builds and maintains strong relationships, provides oversight of agency governance, and ensures compliance of Metrolinx and other government agencies that deliver transportation services.

The branch monitors and ensures that agency activities and governance align with government priorities and objectives, and serves as a ministry resource for advice on agency relations.

What can I expect to do in this role?: As a Policy Advisor, you will:

  • Undertake research on transportation and agency oversight issues
  • Participate in the development of policy/program recommendations
  • Conduct environmental scans and trends analysis as well as quantitative and qualitative research to support the policy and program development processes
  • Draft policy research papers and briefing documents on a range of policy topics and issues
  • Consult and collaborate with stakeholders to exchange information and consult on policy options and solutions
  • Provide support to intraministerial working groups

How do I qualify?:

Research, Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:

You have:

  • Knowledge of research, data gathering and statistical analysis methods to develop study designs and procedural methods, and evaluate results
  • Ability to determine data sources and appropriate analytical techniques, and assess implications of findings

Specialized Knowledge:

You have:

  • Knowledge and awareness of provincial and ministry strategic directions, processes and key objectives pertaining to the transportation sector and program area

Consultation and Interpersonal Skills:

You can:

  • Consult and liaise with a wide variety of internal and external contacts
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships and develop stakeholder partnerships
  • Provide advice to program management

Project Management and Planning Skills:

You have:

  • Strong planning skills to implement complex projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Communication Skills:

You have:

  • Presentation skills to effectively communicate information and proposals to a variety of contacts and stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated written communication skills to prepare complex analytical reports
