Salary range: $61,000 to $76,000 per year

Primary Focus

Under the direction of the Director, Health Economics, or Manager, Health Economics, the Health Economics Research Assistant is responsible for assisting in the preparation of economic products for Canada's Drug Agency. The major function of this position is to provide scientific support in the conduct of economic research and to assist with the preparation of evidence-based economic assessments of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other health technologies.

What do the daily responsibilities look like?

On any given day, the Health Economics Research Assistant will:

  • assisting in the preparation of economic components of scientific reports (e.g., health technology assessments [HTAs] and formulary reviews) and other economic-specific scientific products by:
    • performing preliminary screening and selecting relevant economic reports and articles from literature searches
    • extracting data (e.g., epidemiological, clinical, and cost data) from studies that are to be included in economic reports or economic evaluations
    • conducting basic statistical analyses and model programming, under supervision
    • performing critical appraisal of economic evaluations, which may involve using validated scales or checklists
    • drafting sections of economics reports according to standardized templates and incorporating feedback from internal and/or external reviewers to produce a final economics report
  • conducting analyses of utilization data based on a developed analysis plan, which includes:
    • collecting data from appropriate sources and/or databases
    • performing analyses
    • summarizing and tabulating results

  • The minimum requirement for this position is an undergraduate degree in economics or a health-related discipline plus 1 to 2 years of relevant experience (e.g., work in a health research environment, scientific writing, analysis of datasets).

  • ability to perform work as scheduled
  • willingness to undertake training in economic evaluations, health economic modelling, systematic reviews or meta-analyses, and other training as required; this may require attendance at university courses or participation in online courses to develop skills
  • working well in a team environment as well as independently
  • being self-motivated to learn new concepts and methods
  • tact and diplomacy, and receptiveness to feedback
  • strong organizational skills, plus the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and meet established deadlines
  • ability to review and select relevant reports and summarize scientific findings clearly and succinctly
  • prior experience in a research environment with an understanding of research methods and practical knowledge or research implementation, particularly within health care or life sciences.
