Job Summary

Job Description:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The MS-IM will be responsible for operating and maintaining the MS instrumentation, including routine spectral acquisition and performing specialized/customized MS experiments.
  • The MS-IM will ensure that all MS equipment is in peak operating efficiency and will ensure that all instrument repair is conducted as soon as possible either by inhouse personnel or external service agents.
  • The MS-IM will supervise the scheduling of usage of the MS instruments and develop efficient sample handling methods to ensure efficient service. This will include development of maintenance schedules for minimizing downtime of the instruments. In addition, the MS-IM will supervise any technician(s) assigned to the MS facility and train them, when necessary, on the operation of the instruments. The MS-IM will also assign duties to such technician(s) and monitor their performance. The MS-IM will be expected to manage the MS facility through all growth phases of the Department including additional instrumentation and an expanding user base within the Department and the University as a whole.
  • The MS-IM will maintain user records and be responsible for providing monthly statements of usage to the Departmental Manager or his/her designate. An annual report on the operation, usage, and needs is to be presented to the Technical Resources Committee at the end of the University's fiscal year (currently April 30).
  • The MS-IM will strive to create and maintain a nationally recognized, stateoftheart facility. The MS-IM is thus responsible for ensuring that the facility meets the current and projected needs of the research community as well as the Undergraduate program and as such is responsible for both short and long term strategic planning for the facility. This includes cost recovery, needs assessment and personnel management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:

  • A Ph.
D.

in Chemistry with a demonstrated expertise in the utilization and development of MS instrumental methods for chemical analyses of small molecules and large biomolecules, including EI, CI, ESI (low resolution and high resolution) and MALDI (low resolution and high resolution).


  • Proven background in delivering highly technical seminars to targeted groups in the research community
  • Proven background in providing innovative research solutions to a wide constituency of researchers

SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Computer skills
- extensive knowledge of the use and modification of MS instrumental operating system software.

  • Technical skills
- demonstrated expertise in the operation and development of instrumental analyses using MS techniques.

  • Research skills must be able to participate meaningfully in collaborative research and solve research problems relating to the theory and/or practice of MS.
  • Organizational skills
- ability to work to deadlines and prioritize.

  • Must be selfmotivated and have strong desire to adopt and implement new ideas and techniques.
  • Communication skills
- excellent in both written and oral. Must be capable of delivering seminars and tutorials.

  • Human resource skills
- strong interpersonal, motivational, and supervisory skills.

DECISION MAKING:

  • Deciding of priorities in terms of routine vs specialized and shortterm vs. longterm usage of equipment.
  • The ability to assign and prioritize routine and specialized experiments to the instruments and personnel in the MS facility.
  • Cost/benefit analyses of new vs. repairable equipment
  • Decisions concerned with the daytoday matters arising during the operation of the MS facility.
  • Knowing when to bring to the Department Head or Head's Delegate, matters of concern or urgency.
