JOB OVERVIEW:
The role of the Arena Ice Plant Operator/Maintenance at the Fraser Lake Community Centre and C.H. Foote Memorial Arena demands specialized skills, training, and certification, with meticulous attention to detail being crucial for the safe and efficient operation of these facilities. The position requires availability from Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. However, evening and weekend work is necessary from mid-September to March 31st when the arena ice plant is in operation. During the rest of the year, evening and weekend work may also be required in response to emergencies, and on-call duties may be needed to monitor the Arena Ice Plant.

The primary responsibilities of this role include the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the ice arena, curling rink, and arena complex facilities. Given that our Recreation Facility uses an Ammonia Ice Plant, employees must develop and maintain a working knowledge of safety procedures, operational protocols, and regulatory requirements specific to ammonia ice plants. Additionally, the position involves learning and performing basic maintenance tasks, conducting regulatory checks, and keeping accurate records. The Arena Attendant will be required to undergo training and pass both courses and Provincial examinations related to ammonia ice plant management.

Moreover, the duties of this position include installing, removing, marking, and maintaining the ice surface to support activities such as hockey, figure skating, and public skating. The attendant must develop the skills to operate and maintain equipment like the Olympia ice resurfacer and the Olympia electric ice edger. Organizational skills are also essential, as the Arena Attendant must   prioritize tasks to meet the facility's operational needs, with additional responsibilities potentially assigned by the Director of Public Works or their designate.

The position requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, handling assigned tasks, general maintenance, and janitorial duties. Administrative duties are also a significant part of the role, including booking and scheduling ice time, maintaining records, responding to customer inquiries or complaints, and ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons. All Village employees are expected to engage in positive customer interactions, striving to problem-solve effectively and leave each customer with a positive impression of the Village and the services provided.

Supervision for this position is provided by the Director of Public Works, who, along with their designate, may inspect the Arena Attendant's work to ensure compliance with recognized practices and procedures in arena operations.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Monitor and adjust refrigeration plant controls; report issues to the supervisor.Assist with event setup, takedown, and venue cleanliness.Support maintenance and repair of wastewater and potable water systems.Assist in maintaining and repairing Village streets, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, and buildings.Operate equipment like lawn mowers, backhoes, and garbage trucks as needed.Maintain cemetery grounds, including grave preparation and headstone placement.Ensure facility security and cleanliness; perform general maintenance tasks.Conduct ice resurfacing and maintenance; operate and maintain ice resurfacing equipment.Respond to emergencies and assist in medical situations.Maintain records, update logbooks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.Liaise with contractors and ensure secure facility access.Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Class 5 driver's license.Grade 12 or equivalent.Hold a valid WHMIS certificateRefrigeration Safety Awareness CertificateRefrigeration Operator CertificateAbility to inspect, analyze and troubleshoot the operations of water and distribution systems and facilities.Ability to communicate effectively, understand and convey technical information, and perform job specific math calculations.Heavy Equipment experience will be considered an asset as will heavy equipment/ gas mechanic experience.Demonstrated ability to problem solve and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
