GENERAL STATEMENT
Responding to the requests of faculty and under the general supervision of the chair, the Lab Assistant supports the instructional activity by providing comprehensive assistance in a wide variety of laboratory activities. The incumbent is required to keep abreast of technological changes related to Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

TYPICAL DUTIES
The Lab Assistant shall perform some or all, of the following activities in support of lab and course work under the supervision of department faculty:
• Supervises students in the laboratory setting;
• Assists students by answering questions and demonstrating lab procedures;
• Prepares equipment for the lab, in conjunction with the Mechanical Lab Technologist, prior to the start of a lab ensuring that it is properly set-up and operating correctly;
• Under the direction of faculty, builds, repairs or purchases lab equipment;
• When requested, provides feedback on student performance to faculty responsible for grading the student;
• Be available as required to answer questions on safe use of lab equipment to faculty, staff and students;
• Demonstrates the safe use of hand and machine tools;
• Programs, sets up and demonstrates the operation of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools;
• Demonstrates use of CAD software for use in engineering in the computer laboratories;
• Uses a basic knowledge of electronics to fabricate simple electronics equipment;
• Demonstrates the rapid modelling equipment to build CAD models;
• Assists in researching and completing documentation for purchasing equipment and supplies for use in the department;
• Assists in maintaining a safe working environment;
• Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.

Faculty will request the assistance of the Lab Assistant. The Chair will develop priorities and schedule the Lab Assistant time to meet the needs of the department. Qualifications A Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology with two years experience as a Mechanical Technologist or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A working knowledge of CNC machining and code generation and also a current knowledge of Mechanical Engineering lab equipment and procedures used at the Technician and Technologist level. A basic knowledge of current computer applications taught in the department programs. Must possess excellent human relations skills and have a tolerance for frequent staff, faculty, and student contact. Capabilities The core capabilities are required for all positions at the college.
