Grassland Insect Lab Technician

$16.55 per hour, 37.5 hours per week

Project Description and Main Purpose

This is a multi-partner project to investigate the impacts of grazing practices on biodiversity in the native grasslands of southern Saskatchewan, including vegetation, grassland birds and insects. Canadian Wildlife Federation is responsible for the insect sampling component of this project. Four major groups of insects will be sampled in rangelands by a field team over a two-month period. CWF is hiring Grassland Insect Lab Technicians to support this project.
Reporting to the Entomologist, the Grassland Insect Lab Technician will assist with insect specimen sorting, curation and recording. The goals of the project are to identify the abundance and diversity of insect pollinators, and will include specimen pinning, labelling, and recording.

Key responsibilities

  1. Prepare insect specimens for curation, using proper pinning and labeling techniques;
  2. Sorting insect specimens to family, genera and/or morphospecies to the extent possible and organizing them by collection site;
  3. Prepare specimen labels to encode data denoting taxon, location, date, and collector;
  4. Digitally curate (database) the specimen information;
  5. Prepare insect samples to be shipped;
  6. Enter landscape data, species, and abundance associated with insect specimen collection sites in a database (spreadsheet);
  7. Update progress spreadsheets online;
  8. Adhere to safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately and attend all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety. Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario;
  9. Perform other, related duties as required.

Experience / Skills / Knowledge

Successful candidates will have experience in or demonstrate the ability to learn the following:

  1. Experience working with insect species in natural environments, including experience with various surveying, trapping, and preparation techniques (many of these can be taught).
  2. Familiarity with databasing and applications.
  3. Must have experience with MS Excel.
  4. Experience conducting scientific studies and taxonomic identification and curation of insects.
  5. Experience working with a microscope to identify insects.
  6. Currently a student in a Wildlife Technician Program, Biological Science, Environmental Sciences or related university or college program or of having completed a post-secondary program in one of the programs above.

Eligibility:

In order for candidates to be considered, they must meet the criteria set by Canada Summer Jobs, a program of the Government of Canada. To be eligible, participants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and,
  • is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
International students are not eligible participants.

Length of Contract

The anticipated start date for this summer position is 24 June 2024 for a period of 8-10 weeks.

This position is contingent on receiving funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program.
