    New Afton Mine

    Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

    Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver.     Position Reports To: Tailings and Surface Superintendent

    Position Overview:

    New Afton mine offers an incredible opportunity for an experienced professional to join the Tailings and Surface Team in the role of Senior Tailings Engineer - Operations. The Tailings and Surface Team is involved in a variety of innovative projects including thickened and cement amended tailings deposition, tailings stabilization and dewatering of an existing tailings storage facility, facility reclamation, and industry leading mining induced subsidence monitoring technologies.

    This newly created position will provide mentoring, leadership, and planning support related to operational continuity of site tailings activities and will be joining an established technical team. The primary responsibility for this role is to supervise and lead a team focused on:
  • Ensuring that personnel safety and environmental responsibility are at the forefront of all activities.
Ensuring tailings storage facility availability for uninterrupted tailings deposition; Reporting on operational tailings storage facility performance; Evaluating and implementing tailings storage facility safety and management recommendations; Scoping and planning for new infrastructure or for operational improvements; Development of annual budgets related to operations and capital project expenditures; Providing senior review, guidance, and reporting related to ongoing dewatering well and pond removal tailings stabilization activities; Developing procedures and management plans to support operational excellence; Supporting risk assessment activities and Job Hazzard Assessments.
Success in this role will require fostering active communication and reporting amongst the Team and the establishment of strong working relationships with key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

As a leader you:
Ensure safety considerations and environmental responsibility are at the forefront of decision making; Provide mentorship, coaching, and guidance for team members; Provide leadership, direction, and senior level review for project engineering and reporting activities as a direct supervisor to technical staff; Develop a long-term vision for the success of the site with respect to tailings and surface activities through the development of a 5-year project plan; Deliver plans for tailings related site objectives regarding tailings placement, tailings stabilization, and surface water management; Identify and coordinate activities related to meeting performance objectives set by the Engineer of Record or Tailings Storage Facility Qualified Person; Participate in dam safety inspections, dam safety reviews, and Independent Tailings Review Board meetings; Deliver professionally written technical documents related to proposals, budgeting, and reporting; Support annual reporting to the Chief Inspector of Mines as stated in the HSRC for Mines in British Columbia and the site mining permit; Networking with site stakeholders and support teams; Other duties as required to meet department and site business objectives related to tailings and surface operations.

In addition, the successful candidate has:
8+ years of tailings, mining, project management, construction management, design, consulting, or operations experience; Registered as a P.Eng. with EGBC with a bachelor's degree in mining, civil, or geotechnical engineering or related field with relevant experience; Experience supervising consultants, contractors, and team members; Demonstrated communication, presentation, and conflict-management skills; Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic team environment; and Demonstrable experience with most of the following subjects: Risk assessments; Development of procedures or management plans; Scope development, project planning, and budgeting; Well installation, operation, and rehabilitation; and Earthworks and other construction activities in a heavy civil or industrial setting.

Compensation

The anticipated salary for this position will be between $120,000 to $140,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
