New Afton Mine

Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area provides the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community with its own university and within easy reach of world class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, popular recreational lakes and award-winning vineyards.

About the Role

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day

Reports to:  Senior Operations Metallurgist


Position Duration:  8 or 12 months, starting in September 2024

Position Overview:  We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Metallurgy Co-op student to join our New Afton team for either an 8 or 12-month work term commencing in September 2024. The metallurgy co-op student will work with mill operations and metallurgical personnel to identify, evaluate, and implement solutions to improve process performance and/or reduce costs.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with improvement projects and plant surveys in the grinding, flotation, gravity, and tailings dewatering circuits. Analyze data and report results. Complete metallurgical accounting reports. Calibrate the particle size and on-stream analyzers. Putting safety first in the planning and execution of all works.

Qualifications

Required:

Completion of second-year studies in a post-secondary engineering program, with a focus on Mineral Processing, Mining, Materials, Metallurgical, or Chemical Engineering Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated focus on safety. Experience with mineral processing test procedures would be an asset. Understanding of process modelling software and/or statistical analysis would be an asset.


Would be considered an asset:

Hands-on laboratory experience Experience analyzing mineralogical data Experience using JK SimMet or similar balancing/simulation software

Other requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen. Provide proof of a valid Class 7N/5 driver’s license. Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada. Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements.

Compensation

The anticipated salary for this position will be between $52,000 and $64,480. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
