We are seeking a skilled, dynamic, and highly strategic leader to be our Director. Legal Services. You will provide strategic development and execution of policy and advocacy as well as manage a team of lawyers and paralegals. You will ensure that the organization is well-positioned from a legal and regulatory standpoint where legislative, regulatory, or other external factors could affect the business’ operations today or new initiatives and ventures in the future. This role requires collaboration with both legal and non-legal colleagues across a spectrum of matters ranging from oversight and quality control on operational matters to providing added value strategic advice on major initiatives.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide senior leadership to an effective legal function which covers both legal policy and additional legal advice, ensuring that lawyers are well managed.
  • Provide high quality legal and policy advice to senior managers, lawyers, and other colleagues, providing challenge and technical input where appropriate.
  • In collaboration with the others, ensure in house legal resources work within a framework which promotes continuous professional development, are motivated and supported to provide the highest possible standards of service.
  • Maximize resource efficiency across the departments and deliver value for money. This will involve a continual review of activities and their contribution to the department’s strategic priorities, and deciding when change is necessary to re-align activity to meet the department’s objectives.
  • Lead, inspire and develop legal team members across multiple disciplines, communicating effectively to achieve staff engagement and being a visible and credible leader.
  • Promote teamwork, knowledge sharing and resource coordination to ensure effective allocation of work across the team.
  • Champion the development of staff, creating an inclusive environment which values diversity, encourages learning and development and identifies and acts where capabilities need to be improved.
  • Identify and implement best ways of working to achieve maximum effectiveness and equality of access to our services through benchmarking good practice, listening to staff and consulting service users.
  • Use initiative, be innovative and seek opportunities for strategic change to deliver world class services. Seek, encourage, and recognize ideas and have the courage to take risks and change how things are done, challenging the status quo appropriately where required.
  • Prepare, review, revise and negotiate contracts with clients, vendors, and other third parties, including engineering/consulting services terms and conditions, non-disclosure. agreements, joint venture agreements, and other complex commercial agreements
  • Manage project disputes, client claims, and prime contract matters where required.
  • Research and respond to general legal inquiries from the business that may relate to litigation, regulatory issues, intellectual property, privacy matters, fraud issues, and client complaints.
  • Interpret other legal information and documents, and regulations for leaders in the business.
  • Be a trusted and collaborative department to the business
  • Continuously improve internal legal processes in order to streamline requests and better serve the business

What you’ll need to be successful:

Must haves:

  • 12+ years of relevant legal experience
  • Law degree and current membership in a Canadian Provincial Law Society
  • Prior experience in leadership roles and managing direct reports.
  • Demonstrated skill in gaining the respect and credibility of both internal and external business leaders and working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Understanding of complex legal concepts and terminology with proven ability to adapt skills and knowledge base quickly to learn of legal and risk issues. Able to perform under tight deadlines while maintaining patience in high pressure situations.
  • Strong abilities in contract negotiation and drafting, with emphasis on risk management.
  • Strong degree of pragmatism and a practical, business-oriented application of legal principles.
  • Capacity to think globally while demonstrating the ability and insight to adapt to diverse decision-making approaches.
  • Solid analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to influence and partner with key stakeholders.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to address complex and sensitive policy and regulatory issues.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in both private law firm and in-house environments.
  • Experience in privacy and intellectual property laws.
