EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Alianait Entertainment Group (‘Alianait’) incorporated as a non-profit Society on March 29, 2009 and was registered as a charitable organization effective April 1, 2010. 

 
Alianait’s mission is to build a healthier Nunavut through the arts. In so doing, Alianait educates and advances the public’s understanding and appreciation of the arts. Partnerships and collaboration are at the core of our work. The organization strives to strengthen Nunavut’s cultural community through performance, workshops and training while building strong, effective relationships in the music, cultural and community development sectors.

Since its founding in 2005, Alianait has established a strong presence as an important multi-disciplinary arts festival featuring music, film, theater, dance, circus, spoken word, storytelling and visual arts that has developed a large, increasingly diverse and appreciative audience.

Responsibilities

  • Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  • Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, territorial and local regulations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the arts sector.

In communications, the Executive Director will:

  • Be responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.
  • Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to partners, organizations, and the general public.

In relations with staff, the Executive Director will:

  • Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations are held, and the human resource manual is in practice and updated as needed..
  • See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education
  • Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff..

In budget and finance, the Executive Director will:

  • Be responsible for fiscal management of the organization, that anticipates operating within an approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices.
  • Work with staff and the board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  • Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
  • Be responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support AEG’s mission.
  • Jointly, with the chair and secretary of the board of directors, conducts official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

Qualifications

  • Transparent and high quality leadership
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Ability to convey a vision of Alianait’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers, sponsors and partners.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and sponsor relations unique to the nonprofit sector
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English; Inuktitut is an asset
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee, train and collaborate with staff
  • Ability to work in a cross culture environment, knowledge of communities, and awareness and sensitivity to northern and Inuit culture

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and/or five or more years’ non-profit management experience. Equivalencies that consist of a combination of education, knowledge, skills, and experience to the formal education and experience requirements of this job will be considered. (minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent and 3 years’ experience in event coordination or related field)
