Trans Mountain operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 300,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state. The Trans Mountain Expansion Project will provide increased capacity to support Canadian crude oil production growth and ensure access to global energy markets. The largest project in the pipeline’s history, it involves installing approximately 980 kilometres of new pipeline, as well as new and modified facilities.

The Director, Commercial Asset Management is responsible for the oversight of all commercial deliverables for Trans Mountain’s business including Profil and Loss (P&L) performance, customer relations, budgeting, planning and business development. This includes the continuous evaluation of optimization and growth opportunities for the existing business. It is a key leadership position that is responsible for driving the team and improving the financial performance of assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a “business owner” for the existing assets working with other internal groups to optimize P&L performance with both an immediate and long-term view
  • Lead P&L performance & reporting, budgeting & in-year forecasting, support strategic planning and capital budgeting process
  • Work closely with Shipper Services, Regulatory, Operations, Engineering, Legal, Finance, and other corporate groups to enable a holistic approach to business optimization and opportunity identification
  • Foster relationships with existing and potential customers to address needs, advance business solutions, understand business drivers, and identify opportunities. Build on Trans Mountain’s commitment to partner with Indigenous communities and support relationships with communities and local governments
  • Work closely with Shipper Services, Regulatory, and corporate Business Development groups to ensure a coordinated approach to customer communications. Manage and coordinate communication and roll-out of regulatory initiatives with customers and stakeholders
  • Provide a balanced, risk-oriented approach to the evaluation of new commercial opportunities to ensure strategic fit
  • Facilitate, in coordination with other internal teams, monitoring and challenging the operational performance and optimization metrics to achieve the company’s highest possible availability and gross profit
  • Negotiate contracts as needed including renewals, amendments, and other structures required to optimize the asset base. Manage and resolve contractual, regulatory, and commercial issues as they arise
  • Communicate and meet with various energy sector companies and agencies to collaborate and advise on activities impacting both supply and demand dynamics on a regional and global scale

Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Engineering, or relevant science
  • Master Business Administration (MBA) is an asset
  • 15+ years of experience in the Energy sector with 5 years in a leadership role and a minimum 3-year experience in a similar position
  • Knowledge and understanding of the physical and commercial operation of integrated midstream assets including terminals, pipelines, and marine facilities
  • Past success with the full cycle commercial development process from prospecting, origination, development, contracting, FID, and implementation
  • Expertise in negotiating and executing long term contracts, familiarity with a variety of regulated and non-regulated contract structures,
  • Knowledge of the production and marketing of crude oil and petroleum products within the domestic and international energy environments
  • Experience with standard financial metrics and analysis
  • Knowledge of risk management in the energy sector
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to effectively multitask managing a heavy workload
  • Ability to stay current with changing technologies, regulations, and trends
  • Strong leadership & communication skills with the ability to inspire people to action through his/her influence
  • Strong learning skills with the aptitude to independently research, understand, and implement knowledge in new areas
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
  • Exceptional management, organizational and coordination skills with proven ability to prioritize and control a demanding workload and work effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines

Trans Mountain also operates through 15 First Nation Reserves located within the region spanning the BC interior through Fraser Valley.
