Intent: This full-time position will be renewed annually contingent upon available funding. It is intended that the position will become permanent upon the renewal of a new ten-year funding agreement with the federal government as early as 2025. This position is primarily administrative in nature, with some opportunity for fieldwork and original research.
Backgrounder on the Eeyou Marine Region: The Eeyou Marine Region Wildlife Board (EMRWB) is an Institution of Public Government (IPG) established under Chapter 13 of the Eeyou Marine Region Land Claims Agreement (EMRLCA). The EMRWB is the main instrument of wildlife management and research in the EMR. The five coastal EMR communities are Waskaganish, Eastmain, Wemindji, Chisasibi and Whapmagoostui. The main office of the EMRWB is located in Waskaganish, Quebec. **Support the collection, management and analysis of wildlife data and traditional knowledge in the EMR through such activities as: support research design and fieldwork for projects proposed within the EMR; design, conduct and publish original research on behalf of the EMRWB; seek external funding to support research projects; perform data analysis and write technical reports and management plans as required; finalization of project reports; provide scientific advice on research projects as part of the EMR Project Screening Process;
Work with various co-management partners, levels of government, NGOs and local Cree entities on topics related to wildlife management through such activities as: represent the EMRWB on various technical committees (e.g. Southern Hudson Bay Polar Bear Technical Working Group) and at workshops; review and provide feedback on COSEWIC assessments and federal and provincial species listings and recovery plans; work closely with Nunavik and Nunavut on the management of shared wildlife populations such as polar bear and beluga;
Coordinate and participate in consultation and public hearing processes with the communities and entities of the EMR and co-management partners by: participating in planning meetings, summarizing information and submissions to make management recommendations to the Director;
Serve as the primary point of contact at the operational level with the Wildlife Liaison Officer of the Cree Trappers’ Association (EMR Department – Chapter 12 of the EMRLCA);
Supervise the Wildlife Management Biologist I in such activities as: report writing, project budget management, annual project planning, data collection and management, designation of fieldwork and report writing;
Desired qualifications, skills and assets:
A minimum of a Master of Science Degree in a related field (e.g. Biology, Marine Ecology).

A minimum of 5 (five) years of experience in wildlife management, wildlife research, marine science, or natural resource management;
A minimum of 3 (three) years of research design, project and budget management and supervision of staff;
Writing of technical reports, briefing materials, management plans;
Comprehension of scientific literature and data analysis;
Living and conducting research in a remote environment;
Working with wildlife co-management partners and inter-jurisdictional entities;
Strong oral and written English;
Valid driver’s license
Possession of or eligibility to obtain a PAL (firearms license).
Assets:
Knowledge of French and Cree languages;
Working with Indigenous groups and/or in a cross-cultural environment;
Experience making wildlife management recommendations;
Knowledge of northern coastal and marine ecosystems;
Conducting fieldwork by boat and aircraft;
GIS, mapping, and data management;
Some knowledge of the Eeyou Marine Region Land Claims Agreement and of the James Bay & Northern Quebec Agreement;
Some knowledge of the Eeyou Marine Region and James Bay territory regional context;
Familiarity with fish, shorebird and other wildlife species found in the EMR and northern hemisphere;
Knowledge of research methodologies and scientific data analysis.
